Last attempt to save Marius the giraffe

Earlier today reports were issued by the BBC that tomorrow (Sunday 9th February ) Copenhagen Zoo are planning to euthanase an 18 month old giraffe, Marius as according to their director they were unable to rehome him and no offers had been forthcoming from European Zoos.
On seeing this news, the Yorkshire Wildlife Park in Doncaster, immediately contacted Copenhagen Zoo through the YWP Danish Head of Hoofstock who explained to the main zoo reception why the Park urgently wished to speak to the zoo requested a call to confirm the situation regarding the giraffe. YWP has a state of the art giraffe house built in 2012 with a bachelor herd of 4 male giraffes and the capacity to take an extra male. One of the YWP giraffes is Palle, who came from Copenhagen Zoo in September 2012, when he was the same age as Marius.
YWP has not yet received a return phone call from the zoo to confirm if they are seeking a home for Marius.
John Minion, YWP explained ` We have tried to contact Copenhagen to confirm if they are looking to rehome their young giraffe , as this could be a solution that provides a positive outcome for everyone – including Marius’

Zoologisk Have....Could you please explain WHY on earth you don't take this offer from Yorkshire Wildlife Park, who will rehome Marius??? You haven't even bothered to return their call....Is it more important to you to kill Marius and showing the autopsy to the audience (for money) than giving Marius a chance to live??? YWP fulfill the EAZA....so WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?

Shooting a perfectly healthy animal, when viable offers of a home have been mad goes against every argument for the existence of zoos. If the euthanasia goes ahead - people need to direct their complaints to the zoo's sponsors and boycott the zoo.

Zoologisk Have Please let Marius move to Yorkshire Wildlife Park. Many people will have no respect for your Zoo if you go through with this planm you will be facing a major backlash. To Yorkshire Wildlife Park thanks you for offering Marius a chance of life. I hope he is given that chance to come live at your park.

Yorkshire Wildlife Park. You rock We are many animal lovers with big hearts in support for your quick response to this insane and heartless decision by the Copenhagen Zoo to kill a perfectly healthy animal and feed the remains to the lions on live TV, without trying to find another home for him. However the problem remains to get acknowledgement from Cph Zoo on your request. According to the press release from the Cph Zoo they will execute Marius some time before 10 AM Sunday morning (this equals 9 AM in Yorkshire time zone) and the Zoo don't open their doors to the public or phone lines until after 10 AM. I will try my best in the morning, to get in touch with someone from the staff when they meet up for work, and bring the message to return your call and/or postpone the decision for 48 hours in order to find a better solution... Thanks again. You make so much more sense in my opinion of a Zoo

Dear Zoo

Taking animals down to a "science" level removes the fact they are creatures with feelings, emotions and needs.
As you stated yourself the giraffe needs parenting and family to be well raised.
This being your reason for not castrating him. It diminishes his quality of life you state.

Being scientific, as you claim, is the priority in your reasoning to slaughter the giraffe.
This unbalanced reasoning removes the base core of humanity just as Hitler did by reasoning only blonde hair blue eye citizens should live.

Hence he culled the "weaker" gene poole.
This my friends is exactly what you have done.
You as scientific zoologists should never be in charge of anything living as you have only a scientific brain and no heart.....lights and clockwork with no heart and humanity involved.

I am ashamed you are even in existence as a zoo to the public.

Then you furthered your insane reasoning by butchering up the young giraffe for everyone to see.

You my ignorant zoo have now accumulated the outrage of not just a nation ... but the world.

Sent from my iPhone just now to the Zoo ....😡😡😡

If this kind of behaviour is Copenhagen Zoo policy then there are serious animal welfare issues. The media spotlight is on them so I sincerely hope that the appropriate authorities and bodies intend to investigate them further. All animals at this zoo are at risk. I think their obscene plans to end this animal's life and the disgraceful way in which they have conducted themselves in the media has gone a long way towards destroying the credibility and reputation their zoo. I trust the authorities and the strength of adverse public opinion will see them shut down...

Have emailed them and posted on Copenhagen Zoo FB site a plea for them to contact/return the call of YWP. I hope they do the right thing. First thing is to get Marius to safety of YWP then there must be discussions amongst zoological governing authorities as to how Copenhagen could have got to this point of extreme. Shame on them. Fingers crossed YWP and thank you for trying.

If Copenhagen Zoo choose to shoot Marius instead of rehoming him they will lose any respect they have. Appalled at the quotes from Bengt Holst who sounds as though he desperately needs a change of career. Caring for animals obviously isn't for him.I cannot see how the zoo can possibly go ahead with shooting Marius now that word has leaked out as to his proposed fate. One also has to question what sort of place is this that treats its
