Dear Friends and Neighbors,

With an affordable housing crisis plaguing New York City, and Northern Manhattan in particular, tomorrow, Tuesday, October 18th, I'll join NYS Senator Adriano Espaillat, Democratic Nominee for NYS Assembly Carmen De La Rosa and the advocacy group Picture the Homeless, in calling out landlords who hurt affordable housing stock in New York City.

We'll hold a press conference at 78 Thayer Street, where the landlord, Joseph Noormand of 78-86 Thayer Street Corp., has purposefully kept over 30 rent regulated apartments from being made available to renters. This is unfortunately a familiar tactic in our community. Whether its to prevent new tenants from signing a lease that could prevent a higher sale of the building, or to wait until rents rise in the neighborhood, these tactics deplete the stock of available affordable housing, depleting supply to drive up demand and thereby, prices.

Then, we'll move three blocks north to 4849 Broadway, where a plot of land has sat vacant for nearly 30 years. This would be a perfect place to site affordable housing in a neighborhood that desperately needs it, but the owner has taken no action.

Each of these sites will highlight the Housing not Warehousing Act, a package of bills I've introduced with Public Advocate Letitia James and Housing Committee Chair Jumaane Williams, aimed at highlighting vacant and warehoused properties for affordable housing development. I hope you can join us!

Con una crisis de vivienda asequible azotando a la ciudad de Nueva York, y en particular en el Norte de Manhattan, manana, el martes 18 de octubre, voy a acompañará al senador Adriano Espaillat, a la candidata demócrata para la Asamblea Carmen De la Rosa, y Picture the Homeless, en hacer un llamado a los caseros quienes afectan al caudal de vivienda asequible en la Ciudad de Nueva York.

Vamos a celebrará una conferencia de prensa en el 78 de Thayer St., donde el casero, Joseph Noormand de 78-86 Thayer Street Corp. ha mantenido intencionalmente más de 30 apartamentos impedidos de estar a disposición de inquilinos, posiblemente para evitar que nuevos inquilinos firmen un contrato que pudiese impedir una venta más cara del edificio, o para esperar a que la renta aumente en el vecindario. Estas tácticas desmejoran el caudal de vivienda asequible, disminuyendo la subida de la demanda y los precios

Despues, vamos a caminar tres cuadras más al norte al 4849 de Broadway, donde un espacio de terreno ha estado vacio durante más de 15 años, un lugar perfecto para alojar vivienda asequible en un vecindario que lo necesita desesperadamente.

Nosotros vamos a destacar el Acta de Vivienda, no el de Almacenamiento, un paquete de proyectos introducidos por el Concejal Rodriguez, la Defensor Público Letitia James y el presidente del Comité de Vivienda Jumaane Williams, destinado a destacar las propiedades vacantes y almacenadas, para desarrollo habitacional.
