I wanted to share with you that tomorrow evening I'll be joining community residents and leaders to share the latest discussions about Sherman Plaza, hours before the City Council will vote on this rezoning proposal.
Much has been said about this plan, from many on opposing sides, as well as about what either a yes or no vote could mean for the future of our community. What remains most clear is that we are in the midst of a housing crisis, not just here at home but across the city.
I have stated from the outset of these conversations that any project to come across my desk must have substantial community benefits if it will receive my support before the Council. It must be 50% affordable, have ample space for community cultural and non-profit organizations and be supportive of our small businesses, and with key assurances in place that it will go forward as posed. In my 7 years as your council member I have not approved a single rezoning, with several coming across my desk, because none have met this high standard.
As this will still be several hours before the final deadline, there may be 11th-hour changes, but we will have a good sense of where we are at this time.
I invite you to join me as we fight for affordable housing:
Tomorrow, Monday, August 15th at 6:30 PM on the corner of Sherman and Broadway.
Thank you,
Ydanis Rodriguez
Council Member, District 10
