Council begins changing New York’s street culture by reducing speed limit to 25mph
New York, NY- On Wednesday, October 1st, 2014, NYC Council Member and Transportation Committee Chair Ydanis Rodriguez and the Transportation Committee heard Int-466A concerning the reduction of the city-wide speed limit to 25mph. The committee heard the testimony of Department of Transportation Commissioner Polly Trottenberg, representatives of Transportation Alternatives, Families for Safe Streets, as well as numerous families of crash victims.
Int-466A, introduced by Chairman Rodriguez and co-prime sponsor Councilman David Greenfield, will reduce the speed limit to 25mph in areas where another speed limit is not posted.
"Today the Transportation Committee calls upon New Yorkers to reevaluate the way they look at our streets. In order to achieve Vision Zero we must change the culture in New York surrounding our streets." said Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez. "By reducing the speed limit to 25mph we plant the seed of safety in the minds of New Yorkers and begin the journey towards a necessary culture change.”
Councilman Greenfield said the following concerning Int 466-A:
"I'm proud to sponsor this legislation that will make millions of New Yorkers safer. This law is the lynchpin of Vision Zero and by reducing the speed limit we will literally save lives. It's been a long road but we are finally here and I encourage all of my colleagues to sign on in support of this legislation.
