Here is a message for World Oceans Day from our President, Dr. Lori Marino "The oceans are the world’s life source. Without them we would not function. And they are the only place where cetaceans (dolphins and whales) can thrive. On World Oceans Day, we join with people all over the world to help restore the oceans and their inhabitants. The Whale Sanctuary Project is working to establish the first seaside sanctuaries for captive and injured dolphins and whales in North America. This is a tangible way to shift our relationship with these animals from one of exploitation to restoration: restoring as much of what we’ve taken from them as we can. Cetaceans evolved to live in the ocean, and when they are denied that opportunity by being kept in concrete tanks, their wellbeing suffers greatly. Even though we may not be able to return them fully to the ocean, by providing them with a seaside sanctuary we give them the opportunity to live in a setting as close as possible to their natural environment and to exercise their autonomy. Thank you so much for helping to give these amazing animals a life that’s in harmony with the ocean. And just a reminder: I’ll be doing a live Q&A chat on this page on World Oceans Day, Wed, June 8th. Please join us, beginning at 10 am PDT. Thanks so much, and I look forward to chatting with you." If you want to get involved with the live Q&A, all you need to do is comment on the image that will be uploaded tomorrow. Keep your eyes peeled and we look forward to hearing your questions!
