JAMIE VARDY: ENGLAND STAR BEGINS NON-LEAGUE TALENT SEARCH WITH V9 ACADEMY

- England striker Jamie Vardy opens academy to search for non-league talent
- Leicester City forward went from non-league to international football in three years
- V9 Academy provides professional coaching and guidance for selected non-league players
- Professional clubs will be invited to a talent showcase, starting in 2017
- Players from every non-league level can enter the selection process

England star Jamie Vardy is to offer non-league footballers a chance to emulate his rise to the top of the game through the launch of his V9 Academy.

Vardy, a non-league player as recently as 2012, added to one of the most remarkable stories in English football history in 2015 when he won his first England cap and equalled a Premier League record set by Manchester United’s Ruud Van Nistelrooy by scoring in 10 consecutive matches for his club, Leicester City.

Now the former Fleetwood Town, Halifax Town and Stocksbridge Park Steels striker wants to help unearth more talent from English football’s lower levels and provide opportunities for those that, like him, have been dealt setbacks early in their careers.

“I know there are players out there in a similar positon to where I was, that just need an opportunity,” said Vardy, who became non-league football’s first £1million player when he joined Leicester from Fleetwood three years ago.

“More and more players are dropping out of the system early. For me, it was at Sheffield Wednesday when I was 16 because they thought I was too small. I remember how that felt and it’s difficult to come back from or even think about the professional game.

“I’ve thought for some time that something could be done about it and after several conversations with my agent and my fiancé, Becky, we decided to set up V9 to unearth talent and give those players a shot – hopefully at earning professional contracts, but also to learn and understand what it takes to be a professional at the highest level.”

V9 will provide a week-long residential training camp for selected players to work intensively in a professional club environment, with expert training provided by coaches that are currently or have historically worked at Football League and Premier League level. Players will be evaluated technically, tactically, mentally and physically and be educated in key areas such as nutrition, social behaviour and sports psychology. They will then be provided with bespoke, individual development plans, providing a blueprint for future success in the game.

Most importantly, professional clubs from all levels will be in attendance throughout the week, observing sessions and watching competitive games that will allow players to showcase their talent.

“For the players that show the aptitude to play in the Football League, we will work closely with them to make sure they are placed in the best football environment to go and fulfil their potential,” said Key Sports Management’s John Morris, Vardy’s long-time agent.

“The application process will be open to all players at any non-league level and every application will be taken seriously. However, we will be diligent in the selection stage and those players that we believe deserve a chance will be given an opportunity to take a place.

“We believe there are many more Jamie Vardys out there. The V9 Academy aims to find them.”

Applications for the V9 Academy’s first intake are set to begin in May 2016 with the academy to commence summer 2017, initially for a one-week residential for approximately 60 players.

Any player in non-league football can apply to attend the academy via the V9 Academy website. Visit www.V9Academy.co.uk.
