About The Helper Museum
The Helper Museum is located in the small town of Helper, Utah.
Located just two hours southeast of Salt Lake City. Helper is named for the engines required to help the trains climb the steep grades to Soldier Summit toward Salt Lake City. The Denver and Rio Grande Railroad established the town when the railroad came through the area, and coal that was needed to fuel the steam engines was found nearby. By 1891, a rail depot, a roundhouse, and a hotel were built and the town was founded. As more coal mines were opened in the surrounding area, Helper became the railroad center and commercial hub for coal miners and their families who lived in the many mining camps and company towns in Carbon County. Helper’s Mining & Railroad Museum tells the story of life in the coal camps and the European and Asian immigrants who helped build the area.
