Beats getting them a rabbit, rabbits do not like children and generally aren't the ideal kids pet. Least this could be more rewarding. But it could be her parents actually want a dog and they are just saying it's for her, that's what I'd do anyway.

I don't think the parents actually researched the breed before getting it. It's not recommended for first time dog owners and needs a strong willed owner.
