So I've just exercised my democratic right and inspected the Woodbridge Town Council accounts, which are in the process of external audit. They are open to the public until the end of today. I asked some interesting questions...
Andrew Casey

I think this is a really good example of democracy and open government. To be honest , I think not many people are aware that they have this statutory right but it makes perfect sense to have all of us councillors fully answerable for the decisions we make. It keeps everything above board.

Caroline Page - Are you suggesting The Town Council have done something under handed that we should all know about? Because that’s how it’s coming across.
As these accounts are open to the public I can’t see why you are making such a fuss, but as the Consort to the Mayor of Woodbridge I take offence to what you are implying and its of a slanderous nature.
If anyone has questions about The Town Council or their accounts I suggest you attend the meetings, and put your questions to The Town Council directly yourselves where they will be openly welcomed and answered.

Slander is a serious accusation and seems a disproportionat e response in this instance. The accounts are in the public domain and many people will find them interesting. Is Linda Mortimer suggesting that they don't stand up to scrutiny?

Linda - this comment suggests a depressing failure to understand the processes of open government and the official rights of the town's electors. This public scrutiny period was publicly announced *by* the Town Council *on* its website and boards and is open to *all electors*. This includes every one of us: you, me, anyone else in the town. It is officially the *only opportunity* for the public to be able to check how their taxes are being spent during the ongoing official Audit process. Are you seriously suggesting that it is slanderous for a member of the electorate to avail themselves of this official right?

Just to reiterate what I said to VandaRettie above: Its funny that any mention of these accounts seems to cause such anxiety. Yet they were signed off as fine, back in May, by the entire council (presumably Sheena and Clare included, unless they failed to attend. We don't need to go as far as bringing in partners, do we, Linda?). Its a matter of public record. The strange thing, is - assuming the accounts are fine, (and why should they not be?) that anyone is suggesting it will be expensive to audit them? External Audit IS a totally routine part of the annual town council auditing process - just to double-check the internal one! You can see the announcement of the last years' ones on the WTC website. So why is this one such a big deal?
