229 years ago today, George Mason, Edmund Randolph, and Elbridge Gerry insisted that the Constitution needed to be amended, and so they refused to sign it. In time, Gerry would be vice president in the second James Madison Administration--the only one in which both the president and the vice president were members of the Philadelphia Convention. Madison's first vice president, George Clinton, had been an Antifederalist too, as had Madison's presidential successor, James Monroe. Madison was also the only president whose vice presidents both died while holding that office.
The federal requirement that universities observe Constitution Day remains unconstitutional. It would not have surprised George Mason.
