So after having my heart attack and needing an ambulance ride, several folks have asked me to share some insights.

First you must understand I used to be a paramedic and have a unique perspective.

#1. Remain calm, easier said than done I know. The first responders attending to you are very well trained. You will not be able to educate them on ALS if you are not in control.

#2. If you are able to speak, do so and ask, if possible, to have someone ride along. If you use a wheelchair remember you will need your vehicle if you are released, so plan ahead.

#3. Have a concise/current medical history and copies of all pertinent documents, i.e. advanced Directive, medical POA, list of meds.

#4. Take all meds and supplements. *IMPORTANT* ensure you have original containers for meds. It is not guaranteed the hospital you're taken to will have access to all your meds. If not they require the original bottles to certify the prescription in order to dispense.

#5. Request to use your personal equipment i.e. BIPAP, cough assist etc... The equipment has to be inspected by hospital biomedical equipment staff.

Above all, be calm and understand that although ALS has special considerations your immediate acute illness will dictate your care.

I hope this helps...
