Stop Using the Peloton Tread+

Urgent Warning Comes After Agency Finds One Death and Dozens of Incidents of Children Being Sucked Beneath the Tread+ (Formerly Known as the Tread)

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is warning consumers about the danger of popular Peloton Tread+ exercise machine after multiple incidents of small children and a pet being injured beneath the machines. The Commission has found that the public health and safety requires this notice to warn the public quickly of the hazard.

The urgent warning comes less than a month after Peloton itself released news of a child’s death by a Peloton Tread+ and CPSC’s announcement of an investigation into that incident.

The agency is continuing to investigate all known incidents of injury or death related to the Peloton Tread+.

To date, CPSC is aware of 39 incidents including one death. CPSC staff believes the Peloton Tread+ poses serious risks to children for abrasions, fractures, and death. In light of multiple reports of children becoming entrapped, pinned, and pulled under the rear roller of the product, CPSC urges consumers with children at home to stop using the product immediately. This video demonstrates the hazard to children posed by the Tread+. [Warning, video content may be disturbing to some viewers.] It is believed that at least one incident occurred while a parent was running on the treadmill, suggesting that the hazard cannot be avoided simply by locking the device when not in use. Reports of a pet and objects being sucked beneath the Tread+ also suggest possible harm to the user if the user loses balance as a result.

What should consumers do now?

- Stop using the Peloton Tread+ if there are small children or pets at home. Incidents suggest that children may be seriously injured while the Tread+ is being used by an adult, not just when a child has unsupervised access to the machine.
- If consumers must continue to use the product, CPSC urges consumers to use the product only in a locked room, to prevent access to children and pets while the treadmill is in use. Keep all objects, including exercise balls and other equipment, away from the treadmill.
- When not in use, unplug the Tread+ and store the safety key away from the device and out of reach of children.
- Report any Peloton Tread+ incidents to CPSC at www.SaferProducts.gov or to CPSC’s Hotline at 800-638-2772.

Tread+ treadmills are sold directly to consumers via retail showrooms, and online at www.onepeloton.com.

Model No. TR-01 was called “Tread” from August 2018 to September 2020, when it was renamed “Tread+”.

Under section 6(b) of the Consumer Product Safety Act, CPSC is required to include with this press release any comments or other information or a summary thereof. Accordingly, here is a summary of the company’s statement.

“The Consumer Product Safety Commission’s unilateral press release about the Peloton Tread+ treadmill is inaccurate and misleading. The Tread+ is safe for Members to use in their homes and comes with safety instructions and warnings to ensure its safe use. Like all motorized exercise equipment, the Tread+ can pose hazards if the warnings and safety instructions are not followed. The Tread+ is not for children under 16. Peloton warns Members not to let children use the Tread+ and to keep children, pets, and objects away from the Tread+ at all times. Any owner of a treadmill – whether made by Peloton or not – should follow these warnings, as they are included in the applicable safety standards, which the Peloton Tread+ meets.”

I'm sorry, but no. Lots of things are hazardous when you're not paying attention. I don't even let my cat or dogs in the room when I use the equipment bc an accident could happen and I'm not taking a chance with their safety and security. Same with the bike. They've tried to sit by the wheels and pedals when I'm riding, but I don't let them bc the wheel and pedals can be dangerous when in motion. Now they sit behind the "child" gate and watch me until I'm done.

Also, the Tread has a safety key. Why are kids being allowed to turn it on? And walk on it w/o shoes? That's dangerous too. Her toes could have gotten caught between the slats.

This isn't an issue with a specific treadmill, this is an issue with negligent parents letting their kids play on things clearly meant for adults that they shouldn't be playing on. But, hey, at least they had a video camera set up to capture it

How is this Peloton’s fault? Had they removed the safety key or been watching their children it wouldn’t have happened.

As sad as this is, this is NOT Peloton's fault! As many others have said, there are thousands of things out there that are dangerous when children are unsupervised. We don't ban those things. We just need to be careful and watchful, especially when children are involved. The CPSC is "charged with protecting the public from unreasonable risks of injury or death" associated with the use of products. The risk here is only unreasonable because of the lack of supervision by parents. The focus shouldn't be to encourage us to stop using the Peloton Tread, a product that we love and that helps us with our health and well being. The focus should be to encourage parents to be vigilant.

this is brutal and honestly it’s the parents fault not that the company’s fault, when you have kids you need supervise them at all times. this just shows there was no parental supervision as this was happening, the parents should be at interest here.

Um, so, are they going to start regulating: kitchen knives, hot stoves, hot water from the tap, laundry machines, hair dryers, hot irons, electrical outlets, bikes, cars, matches, cleaning agents, plastic bags, swimming pools, bath tubs...the list goes on? I really don't even understand why there is a discussion about this. Children need.to be supervised around everything that could hurt them until they are old enough to understand risks and proper handling of potentially dangerous objects, appliances, machines, etc etc etc! I seriously hope Peloton isn't sued over this, or if they are, they don't win. The only negligence here is on the part of the parents, not a company that produces an excellent product meant to be consumed by adults of sound mind and body.

Don't be ridiculous! This is almost funny. How about telling parents to keep an eye on their kids and not let them on any treadmill? How about some common sense? Just another stupid government agency making zero sense.

Oh yeah. It's the products fault. Or is it parenting? CPSC should stop putting the blame on products. Everything is not made for children, and because a parent is neglectful, doesn't mean the product is bad. Why are the exercise equipment and children's toys in the same location?

This is bad parenting. Not only the treadmill not secure, the spin bike and weights Just out in open mixed with toys and junk (trip hazards) every where. No safety precautions at all for that baby and toddler. Terrible.

Peloton can add whatever safety feature to the treadmill but is doesn’t stop clear neglect by the parents.

Actually look at the video and look around the house. Pure neglect.

When do you hold the mom, dad, parents, grandparents or whoever should be responsible for not watching those children. This is not a peloton issue. As far as not watching those children and making sure that they don't go near the machine.
This world has gotten where it wants to point the finger at everybody except those who are negligent and irreresponsible.
Whatever happened to common Sense.
