RL: Sort of. Consumers don't yet know how to think about this - it takes a while to absorb it all regardless of IQ. Qualcomm does do a lot of this, but they're not the only ones capable of designing and fab-ing logic ICs which can do this relatively simple IoT embedded controller concept. And what do computers do? They allow more efficient use of natural resources like people do, but faster. Letting a hydro, nuke, gas (, or wretched coal) plant know second by second when to ramp up or down can save a lot of wasted energy and reduce carbon release into the atmosphere. (I am not here to argue global warming - pick up a SciAm or National Geographic mag - or go ask a farmer about changing growing seasons - or go to the beach and try to remember if the birds that you see today were the exact same ones that you saw there when you were a kid.) So connecting stuff together is a new norm that perhaps we should get used to having around.
