Today with their decision of a two year suspension, the ITF tribunal unanimously concluded that what I did was not intentional. The tribunal found that I did not seek treatment from my doctor for the purpose of obtaining a performance enhancing substance. The ITF spent tremendous amounts of time and resources trying to prove I intentionally violated the anti-doping rules and the tribunal concluded I did not. You need to know that the ITF asked the tribunal to suspend me for four years – the required suspension for an intentional violation -- and the tribunal rejected the ITF’s position.

While the tribunal concluded correctly that I did not intentionally violate the anti-doping rules, I cannot accept an unfairly harsh two-year suspension. The tribunal, whose members were selected by the ITF, agreed that I did not do anything intentionally wrong, yet they seek to keep me from playing tennis for two years. I will immediately appeal the suspension portion of this ruling to CAS, the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

I have missed playing tennis and I have missed my amazing fans, who are the best and most loyal fans in the world. I have read your letters. I have read your social media posts and your love and support has gotten me through these tough days. I intend to stand for what I believe is right and that’s why I will fight to be back on the tennis court as soon as possible.

Love, Maria

P.S. My lawyer prepared a short summary of how the ITF process works so I thought I would pass it along to my fans so you too can be aware of what the ITF rules call for

May be an image of text that says 'Conclusion 104. The contravention of the anti-doping rules was not intentional as Ms Sharapova did not appreciate that Mildronate ontained substance prohibited from January 2016. However she does bear sole responsibility for the contravention, and very significant fault, in failing take any steps check whether the continued use of this medicine was permissible. If she had not concealed her use of Mildronate from the anti-doping authorities, members of her own support team and the doctors whom she consulted, but had sought advice, then the contravention would have been avoided She the sole author of her own misfortune'

Maria, sad to hear that the tribunal gave you 2 year suspension. On the other hand, great to hear from you that you are going to fight and appeal to CAS.
I do wish CAS would lift your ban completely or, at least, shorten your suspension.
I know that it is not a legal argument but maybe you should present CAS with all proof of support you receive from your fans.
Standing by you, Tomasz

I'm with you. Stop the witch hunt. Nothing is more frustrating than watching some people get away with outright cheating and others get slammed for following doctor's orders. Now the IOC is going to let men compete as women? I have followed your career for many years. Stay a class act. 👍

I have been a fan since you won Wimbledon, and I still am. And I would dearly love to see you competing again. But I am disappointed. The evidence seems clear that you were using this drug as a performance enhancer, and hiding the fact that you were doing so. That being the case, even if it wasn't against the rules until 2016, it was still against the spirit of fair play. I think you should cop it sweet and quit complaining that you have been hardly done by.

Maria, I just want what is right and what is just. We, your fans know that you didn't intentionally do something to jeopardize yourself or the sport so I am at a loss as they feel the same way. Just have your team do what they have to do and get back on court as soon as possible. After this whole thing gets settled you will need to come back like gang busters in order to get your ranking back! We love you Maria

Thanks for taking the time to explain us the ban. Fight on, tell us how we can support you and help. Your tennis family will never abandon your cause.

When we are on the worst part of the struggle, lots of opportunities to grow and learn arise. You are not alone, we are with you.

Your life is greater and larger than the game of tennis, we are sure to witness you bloom in ways not even you thought were possible.

Maria Sharapova just know that no matter what, I and I believe millions of your fans out there will always have your back and be supportive of you throughout this process. We'll keep praying until this is resolved and the ruling overturned. I cannot comprehend the fact that, you ruled something as 'Unintentional' and then gave out a harsh judgement. Something is fishy. Be strong and God will take this under control.

Force Maria, you will not be the girl that all the other players want as a friend, but if you are an example and a goal to win, you have determination and courage to play your tennis, your style often copied but not equaled, you're still the numero 1 for many, goes forward, always forward, never give up.

The list of banned substances was there. You chose not to read it or chose to ignore it. And I find it interesting that your people, that you pay for their expertise, none of them knew you were on this medication, like you were hiding the fact. Sorry, but you are busted and should feel relieved that you did not get a 4 yr suspension. And BTW, I am a fan of yours

Intentional or not. You alone are responsible fir what you put in your body.Apparently you had ample time from the date that this drug appeared on the list to be banned until the effective date.I am not certain what they believed.A two year ban because they believed you or because you willfully ignored that the drug was to be banned.Serve your suspension and come back.Good luck.

I am 100% sure it was not intentional. but tbh it is such a big thing to miss from the whole of your team, to the point of almost being impossible. These things happen and sometimes you just have to face the consequences. Good luck with the appeal!!

Intention in this case does not mean you were forced or that the drug was induced into you while you were intoxicated , mentally impeded or unconscious . Intention Here refers to the fact that you intentionally took the substance but not knowing that it was banned.

Sorry Maria Sharapova but YOU did it, so YOU should be punished! I don't believe that you didn't know that meldonium is on the anti-doping list. You have people to do everything for you, PR managers, lawyers, doctors etc. and you didnt't know that meldonium is a bad choice? Yeeeea and I'm a Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic in one Stupid way to protect your name but in my opinion - you ruined your name and I don't know who was BIG - you or meldonium I don't know what you can do on the court without meldonium. Maybe big things... maybe nothing! If you will back on court - please, show your real face and your real tennis, without doping! #MashaGoHome!

Maria Sharapova beautiful Good afternoon. I fully support you in your desire to appeal to the two years that you have applied for suspension of all activity in tennis. I think you are being unfair, since they themselves accept that you had no intention of taking full advantage applying yourself these drugs. I hope that you achieve win the appeal, and I mean that my tennis is not the same without your participation. Have a sensational beautiful afternoon.

You have some of the best personnel in the game on your team Maria so whether it was your intention or not you should have known. No excuse I'm afraid so you should accept the punishment and become a better athlete by learning from it. Keep your head down, get through the ban then go back to the game. Maybe in the meantime spend the next 2 years working with kids and inspiring them to win naturally
