Overwhelming, veto-proof, bipartisan House and Senate majorities support my provision with Rep. Anthony Brown to rename bases named for the Confederacy, but Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Jim Inhofe wants to strip it out behind closed doors. We urge the committee leaders: don't remove the provision.
Military bases were named after Confederate generals during the Jim Crow era to strengthen a movement that tried to glorify the Confederacy and reinforce white supremacy. It is time for our country to stop honoring traitors who took up arms against our nation in defense of slavery.
