AN OPEN LETTER TO MAJORITY AMERICA

TO: Those who think both leading presidential candidates are dishonest and have little chance of leading America forward:

(…or, stated more simply)
TO: The majority of America:

Note: If you are one of those rare souls who genuinely believe Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are honorable people – if they are the role models you want for your kids – then this letter is not for you. Instead, this letter is for the majority of Americans who wonder why the nation that put a man on the moon can’t find a healthy leader who can take us forward together.

I want to tell you about four unsolicited conversations from the Fremont Wal-Mart this morning:

**Retired union Democrat meat-packer:
“What the heck is wrong with that city where you work? Why can’t they give us a normal person? Is it really so hard?”

Me: “Actually, it is for them – because most people in DC buy the nonsense that DC is the center of the world. You and I, despite our party differences, both agree that Fremont is the center.”

Union Democrat (interrupting): “…Because this is where my grandkids are.”

**Young evangelical mom:
“I want to cry. I disagree with Hillary Clinton on almost every single thing – but I will vote for her before Trump. I could never tell my kids later that I voted for that man.”

**Middle-aged Republican male (more political than the other folks):
“It feels like the train-car to hell is accelerating. Why is DC more filled with weirdos and yet more powerful at the same time? How do we slow this down long enough to have a conversation about actually fixing our country?”

**Trump supporter (again, unsolicited):
“Please understand: I’m going to vote for him, but I don’t like him. And I don’t trust him – I mean, I’m not stupid. But how else can I send a signal to Washington?!”
________

I’ve ignored my phone most of today, but the voicemail is overflowing with party bosses and politicos telling me that “although Trump is terrible,” we “have to” support him, “because the only choice is Trump or Hillary.”

This open letter aims simply to ask “WHY is that the only choice?”

Melissa and I got the kids launched on homework, so I’ve been sitting out by the river, reflecting on the great gap between what folks in my town are talking about, and what folks in the DC bubble are talking about.

I trust the judgment of this farm town way more than I trust DC. And so I’d like to share a dozen-ish observations on these Wal-Mart and other conversations today:

1.
Washington isn’t fooling anyone -- Neither political party works. They bicker like children about tiny things, and yet they can’t even identify the biggest issues we face. They’re like a couple arguing about what color to paint the living room, and meanwhile, their house is on fire. They resort to character attacks as step one because they think voters are too dumb for a real debate. They very often prioritize the agendas of lobbyists (for whom many of them will eventually work) over the urgent needs of Main Street America. I signed up for the Party of Abraham Lincoln -- and I will work to reform and restore the GOP -- but let’s tell the plain truth that right now both parties lack vision.

2.
As a result, normal Americans don’t like either party. If you ask Americans if they identify as Democrat or Republican, almost half of the nation interrupts to say: “Neither.”

3.
Young people despise the two parties even more than the general electorate. And why shouldn’t they? The main thing that unites most Democrats is being anti-Republican; the main thing that unites most Republicans is being anti-Democrat. No one knows what either party is for -- but almost everyone knows neither party has any solutions for our problems. “Unproductive” doesn’t begin to summarize how messed up this is.

4.
Our problems are huge right now, but one of the most obvious is that we’ve not passed along the meaning of America to the next generation. If we don’t get them to re-engage -- thinking about how we defend a free society in the face of global jihadis, or how we balance our budgets after baby boomers have dishonestly over-promised for decades, or how we protect First Amendment values in the face of the safe-space movement – then all will indeed have been lost. One of the bright spots with the rising generation, though, is that they really would like to rethink the often knee-jerk partisanship of their parents and grandparents. We should encourage this rethinking.

5.
These two national political parties are enough of a mess that I believe they will come apart. It might not happen fully in 2016 – and I’ll continue fighting to revive the GOP with ideas -- but when people’s needs aren’t being met, they ultimately find other solutions.

6.
In the history of polling, we’ve basically never had a candidate viewed negatively by half of the electorate. This year, we have two. In fact, we now have the two most unpopular candidates ever – Hillary by a little, and Trump by miles (including now 3 out of 4 women – who vote more and influence more votes than men). There are dumpster fires in my town more popular than these two “leaders.”

7.
With Clinton and Trump, the fix is in. Heads, they win; tails, you lose. Why are we confined to these two terrible options? This is America. If both choices stink, we reject them and go bigger. That’s what we do.

8.
Remember: our Founders didn’t want entrenched political parties. So why should we accept this terrible choice?

9.
So...let’s have a thought experiment for a few weeks: Why shouldn’t America draft an honest leader who will focus on 70% solutions for the next four years? You know...an adult?
(Two notes for reporters:
**Such a leader should be able to campaign 24/7 for the next six months. Therefore he/she likely can’t be an engaged parent with little kids.
**Although I’m one of the most conservative members of the Senate, I'm not interested in an ideological purity test, because even a genuine consensus candidate would almost certainly be more conservative than either of the two dishonest liberals now leading the two national parties.)

10.
Imagine if we had a candidate:
...who hadn’t spent his/her life in politics either buying politicians or being bought

…who didn’t want to stitch together a coalition based on anger but wanted to take a whole nation forward

…who pledged to serve for only one term, as a care-taker problem-solver for this messy moment

…who knew that Washington isn’t competent to micromanage the lives of free people, but instead wanted to SERVE by focusing on 3 or 4 big national problems,
such as:
A. A national security strategy for the age of cyber and jihad;
B. Honest budgeting/entitlement reform so that we stop stealing from future generations;
C. Empowering states and local governments to improve K-12 education, and letting Washington figure out how to update federal programs to adjust to now needing lifelong learners in an age where folks are obviously not going to work at a single job for a lifetime anymore; and
D. Retiring career politicians by ending all the incumbency protections, special rules, and revolving door opportunities for folks who should be public “servants,” not masters.

This really shouldn’t be that hard.

The oath I took is to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution. In brief, that means I’m for limited government.

And there is no reason to believe that either of these two national frontrunners believe in limiting anything about DC’s power.

I believe that most Americans can still be for limited government again -- if they were given a winsome candidate who wanted Washington to focus on a small number of really important, urgent things -- in a way that tried to bring people together instead of driving us apart.

I think there is room – an appetite – for such a candidate.

What am I missing?

More importantly, what are the people at the Fremont Wal-Mart missing?

Because I don’t think they are wrong. They deserve better. They deserve a Congress that tackles the biggest policy problems facing the nation. And they deserve a president who knows that his or her job is not to “reign,” but to serve as commander-in-chief and to “faithfully execute” the laws – not to claim imperial powers to rewrite them with his pen and phone.

The sun is mostly set on the Platte River -- and the kids need baths. So g’night.

Ben

Not supporting Trump is not correctly supporting the will of the republican voters. You are elected by the people for a reason. Go with who we have selected for our nominee, or you are ultimately giving the election to Hillary. THIS IS WHY WE ARE FED UP WITH THE ESTABLISHMENT LIKE YOU.

Trump will do more to accomplish your A B C and D Ben than Hillary ever would. Back Trump and work to change the party from within. If you don't you elect Hillary and aid and abet the deterioration of your A B C and D. Your disdain for millions of people who voted in this primary process speaks volumes about you Ben. You are in a dark arrogant place. We don't have a Walmart here in Curtis but if you want to hear from a Cruz supporter who is now a Trump supporter drive southwest.

Really Senator?? Tell us more about how bad it all is!

My only question is....

WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?

We HAD good candidates up against Trump and yet all you did was sit on the sidelines and complain about him while the rest of us were out there actually working to try and stop Donald.

Instead, you were marching around on Fox saying "#NeverTrump!" Without actually doing anything about the problem. You are no different than 95% of the others in DC who put their own personal image and desire for media attention over the need of their country.

So forgive me if I really don't care what you have to say about how much you hate Trump. You saw him coming and did nothing to stop him.

You're part of the reason we are in this mess.

(And I'm going to keep bringing this up as long as you keep writing #NeverTrump to get more headlines.)

Senator Sasse: I am a creature of the House and Senate. Full disclosure. I worked for Governor Kasich when he was chairman of the Budget Committee. He is the type of leader you described in your letter. He has the experience, the vision and temperament to lead America. He knows how to work across the isle to find solutions to the challenges we face. He has the foreign policy experience to keep us safe. He worked for a decade to get a balanced federal budget. There wasn't another candidate on the stage that could make the same claim. He went to Ohio and brought their budget into balance, reformed regulations and reduced taxes -- repealed the death tax! He ran a positive campaign unlike many of the others. He stated repeatedly that he is an American first not a Republican or Democrat. Shame on you for not getting behind Governor Kasich. He was our last best hope to heal the wounds between the parties and bring our country together for the greater good!

Thank you Ben for your letter. You spoke directly to me. I pray that our nation will wake up from this horrible nightmare and see the need to find, draft, and support a true Constitutionalist for President and for the House and Senate. It is time for true change. You are beginning that discussion, let's keep it going. May God have mercy on us and open our eyes and humble us before Him to seek Him again and allow Him to truly heal our land.

Trump at least says he is pro life..pro second amendment....pro traditional marriage...pro coal...pro jobs...

Ben you need to look long and hard in the mirror..slap yourself across the face...and wake up!!!!

If you are not for Trump you are for Hillary!

If you are against Trump...you are for Hillary!!!

If you encourage people to vote third party....you are encouraging them to give the election to Hillary!!!

I think this is EXACTLY democracy at work. First, let me state Trump wouldn't be my choice either, but the OTHER VOTERS have gone to the polls or caucuses and made him the leading nominee for our party. Whether or not YOU like him is a moot point. The republican voters from the other states have spoken, and it's way too late to think of ways to stop the train. Instead, do something constructive and do everything you can to prevent a criminal like Hillary or a Socialist like Bernie from continuing to lead our country down the path Barrack has blazed for us. Trump WILL create jobs, and WILL get people off the public dole.

The more you talk the deeper hole you are digging and showing yourself as big part of the problem with nothing to offer but complaints. We met during my campaign for State Senate against Tyson Larson and I supported your cause but I was disappointed that you did not have the courage to debate Domina. Your flowery rhetoric is wearing thin and is lacking the substance that I assumed you had. Here is the thing those in leadership do not understand. Trump is the culmination of the frustrations most people feel after being force fed the same "good old boys" of the last few elections. Romney and McCain were fed to us as "compromise candidates from the political elite. Neither elicited the kind of excitement needed to energize people to turn out and vote. The growing distaste of the republican voters first showed itself in 2010 with the rise of the TEA Party. Then again in the 2014 midterms with the rise of the Freedom Caucus. Now after 7 years of answering the call from the Republican leadership and electing them majorities, and after that same Republican leaderships failure to even put up a fight against the Obama agenda, the revolution within the party has begun. Do not blame the voters or the Trump supporters for this, you must place the blame squarely on those in leadership roles who have not heard or acknowledged the frustrations of the people they are supposed to represent. Now you are throwing about the idea of a third party. While the idea may have merit, will it solve any of the internal issues. Firstly, it would guarantee democratic party control for several elections, maybe even a generation. Second, we already have two opposing views in government, just imagine the partisanship battles a third distinct party would cause. Thirdly, if you want an example of the failures of the third party scheme simply look at the Libertarian Party. Many of us identify in many ways with Libertarians, but that agenda has gone no where. So, in theory i agree with the concept, but in practice it would be doomed before it started. It is time for the parties to look internally for the solutions not break away and basically hand the keys to the democrats for the next 20 to 30 years.

Dear Rep Sasse, smaller government is not a solution. It's part of the rhetorical problem you identify. Hard problems are not solved simply, as I know you know. Your post is not helpful in creating real solutions. But, I believe your heart is in the right place, and we would likely agree more than not. My autoworker parents paid their taxes gladly and bought highways and bridges and technology and education. I think we need more analysis on the problem end and less rush to facile sound bite "common sense" promises.

We did have an honorable man (Cruz) on the ballot until Tuesday night. A reasonable, educated well tempered man. But the contempt Americans feel towards the current administration combined with PC garbage being shoved down our throats brought too many to the boiling point, hence - The Donald. Washington, DC is a place where many people who have no involvement with government whatsoever live and work. It is a city full of museums and galleries and parks and schools and restaurants, with a diverse population. It just so happens that the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT, which is the body that has caused all of our country's problems, is located within Washington, DC, in the midst of us who live and work here and want nothing to do with it. I completely agree with your assessment, but for 2016 we must get behind Trump and get rid of the worse of two evils. You have the opportunity to influence Trump if we can get him into the White House. People like you, Ted Cruz, and Ben Carson might be able to accomplish something with Trump as president. You will have no influence over another Marxist dictator. A third party candidate this year puts Comrade Hillary in the White House, the same role Perot played in electing Bill twice. Unfortunately Senator, I believe you are on the wrong side of this argument, and your statements are telling me that you truly don't understand the republican electorate. The majority of the republican electorate are not far right conservative, the majority of the republican electorate are center-leaning moderates. They are finding out the same thing on the dems side, that the mainstream of the party is not far left, but moderate democrats. That's why Bernie is losing the popular vote there.
It's funny that you say ONLY 40% of repubs want Trump, but keep in mind those numbers were in a field of SEVENTEEN. By your own logic, 80-90% of the republican electorate doesn't want an ideological conservative. I'm not saying conservatism is dead, but with the country's demographics shifting ever more rapidly, conservatism has to adapt to have a more populist appeal otherwise it runs the risk of never being implemented again. I realize that's hard to do since that goes against the very nature of conservatism.
The United States has always had a two-party system, and it has pretty much worked well up until now. The problem is, President Obama has succeeded so much so in dividing Americans along ideological lines that it almost seems impossible to coexist with anyone that doesn't agree politically. Friendships are being lost and President Obama has even succeeded in destroying families because of political disagreements. He has succeeded so much so, that Americans have lost sight of the true enemy, Liberalism.
It's in liberalism's very nature to do what the President is doing, destroy and divide the very foundation of what we hold dear. As a Trump supporter, I can tell you that I am very much dead set against liberalism as you are, and that's part of the reason that fuels our passion for supporting Trump. It's important to note here that Trump is NOT an ideologue, and that's what was intended, as any ideologue, left or right, would only make the ideological divides larger than they are today.
Unfortunately, your call for more choices in a general election wouldn't pan out well for conservatives or progressives as the majority of the American electorate are either moderates or independents. The formation of a conservative party outside of the republican party would, in fact, mean the end of conservatism as we know it, because it simply wouldn't have the numbers to win anything. And the demographics in America aren't exactly moving in conservatism's favor.
We know what we will be getting with Hillary Clinton. More progressive leftist ideologue policy, robbing our kids future even more and quite possibly sending us into default on our debt. Not to mention the borders stay open, ISIS continues to grow and flourish, and our world becomes much less safe than it is even today. It has to stop. Trump has never been in politics, so to automatically brand him as a raging liberal before he has even had a chance to do anything isn't really fair. All we humbly ask as Trump supporters is to look at the platform he creates to run on and judge from there. Who knows, you may actually like what you see, maybe not, but please don't judge the book by its cover.

I am a Tea Partier for Trump, and I am ashamed that you and many others feel it is conservative to let Hillary win. For years, I have always fought hard for Conservatism, while being told I am too hot-headed and stubborn to see any reason, like other conservatives. Now, I am beginning to see what they were saying to me. Stop making yourself along with every other conservative the laughing stock of the nation and the world. We are better than this. It is our duty to help the candidate more likely to protect our freedoms win, and that person is Trump. Whether you like Trump or not, I don't care. What I do care about is not letting Hillary win and see her appoint the most Liberal justices ever. Trump will appoint more conservative people, people that will fight hard for liberty. I am only going to say this, Senator Sasse is bright and says nice things but he can't wave a magic wand to make these two candidates go away. So we are stuck choosing. Make no mistake people, a vote for anyone other than Trump in November is a vote for Hildabeast. You can save your conscious and vote libertarian or write in a name of some conservative but all that does is hand power to Hillary and Bill.
Let me give you another thing to chew on to help you vote this November. The Supreme Court!! Go look at who is there now and their ages and then think about the possibility that over 4-8 years of whoever we elect could potentially be in position to put 4 or 5 new younger justices on the court when you look at the ages of current sitting justices and life span. Let that sink in a minute. 4 or 5 justices that could turn the court into 7-2 instead of 5-4 that would be there decades!!! If Hildabeast gets in the Whitehouse, think about how far left the court will be for decades.
I for one won't tolerate that and that alone is why I will vote Trump over Hildabeast in November!
