La jueza asociada del Tribunal Supremo de EEUU, Sonia Sotomayor, en su opinión disidente, critíca fuertemente la reciente opinión en el caso Jones v. Mississippi (22 de abril de 2021); expresando que la 8va Enmienda a la Constitución de EEUU sobre trato cruel e inusitado requiere que una persona joven que es sentenciada a una sentencia de encarcelamiento perpetuo debe tener por lo menos alguna esperanza que pasará algunos de sus años de vida fuera de los muros de las prisiones.
