Russian Defence Ministry refutes information, which had been spread by Associated Press about alleged construction of a “military base” in the historical part of Palmyra (Homs province)
Russian Defence Ministry official, Major General Igor Konashenkov:
“There has been not a single “new Russian base” in the territory of Palmyra. There is not any as well.
The Associated Press mentions satellite images of this region, which had been published by UNESCO. The images demonstrate temporary camp of units of the International Mine Action Centre of the Russian Armed Forces, which had been clearing the historical part of Palmyra from mines. Now, the units are performing mine-clearing operations in Tadmur.
Deployment of the temporary camp until the end of the mine-clearing operations has been agreed on with Ministry of Culture and other government departments of the Syrian Arab Republic.
Except for living modules, a field hospital, which provids medical assistance to civilians, and field bakery plant, which provids products to Syrians, have been deployed in the temporary camp.
It is to be stressed that the temporary camp of military engineers, the hospital and the bakery make no mystery. More than 150 journalists of leading foreign media agencies have familiarized themselves with work of the facilities and made reports from the camp during previous press-tour (on May 5), when Palmyra had hosted concert of maestro Valery Gergiev with the orchestra of the Mariinsky Theatre.
Moreover, together with the foreign journalists a lot of the UNESCO international experts, who had arrived there to see the concert, have also visited the temporary camp.
It is to be noted that we invited representatives of the Associated Press to join the press-tour. However, they refused to join it for reasons unknown to us. I consider that there would be no “pseudo sensation” about construction of the “new base in Palmyra” by Russians if journalists of this authoritative agency had visited Palmyra and the temporary camp”.
The Associated Press, American news agency, had spread information referring to the American organization for conservation of cultural heritage about “construction of a new military base in Palmyra in the central part of Syria by Russian military”. This organization had posted satellite image demonstrating location of the Russian military camp in close vicinity to cultural artifacts of the Ancient Palmyra.

Work continues in the Syrian Arab Republic to resolve the conflict in a non-military manner and to provide comprehensive assistance to Syrian citizens in restoring peaceful life.
Over the past day, representatives of the Russian Center for Reconciliation of Opposing Sides held two humanitarian actions in the village of Kafr-Hamra in the province of Aleppo, in the village of Ramala in the province of Aleppo, during which the population was given food packages with a total weight of 1.9 tons.
In total, since the Russian Centre for Reconciliation started settlement process, it carried out 2902 humanitarian actions. The total weight of humanitarian cargo delivered amounts to 5,1 thousand tons.
The joint efforts of Russia and Turkey continue to implement the provisions of the Russian-Turkish Memorandum of common ground of October 22, 2019.
Another joint Russian-Turkish patrol took place in the province of Aleppo from the checkpoint Jahir-al-Faukani to a point 8 km northwest of Kobani and back.
Russian military police units continued patrolling in the Membij area of Aleppo province from Ajami along two routes in the direction of Avshariyah and Membij.
Russian military police units conducted patrols in Raqqa and Hasakeh provinces on the route from Ain-Isa to Tel-Tamer and back, and in Hasakeh province on the route from Qamishliya to Ain-Divar and back
The army aviation forces conducted air patrols on the routes from Metras to Bannan and back, from Qamishliya to Qasr al-Dib and back, from Qamishliya to Tell-Tamer and back.
Russian military police units continue to escort civilian vehicles along the M4 highway between the settlements of Ain-Isa in Raqqa province and Tell-Tamer in Hasakah province. Over the past day, 367 cars and 722 people were escorted. A total of 56,572 vehicles and 103,742 people have been escorted since May 25, 2020.
Over the past day, there have been no reports of attacks by active illegal armed groups controlled by Turkey.
At the same time, in the Idlib de-escalation zone, 45 attacks were recorded from the positions of the terrorist group Jabhat al – Nusra (including 36 attacks, according to the Syrian side), of which 23 attacks were recorded in Idlib province, 9 attacks in Latakia province, 4 attacks in Aleppo province, and 9 attacks in Hama province.
The Russian Centre for Reconciliation of Opposing Sides urges leaders of illegal armed formations to cease hostilities and move towards peaceful settlement of the situation in areas they occupy, and ensure delivery of humanitarian relief to Syrian civilians.
