An important read. Life on the road isn't what you'd imagine.

Insomnia, anxiety, break-ups … musicians on the dark side of touring

Long hours in vans and solitary hotel rooms. Screaming fans when you’re on stage, then back home to feed the cat. Musicians talk about the psychological dangers of life on tour

I had a ball and would do it again in a heartbeat if the opportunity presented itself. It's a matter of adaptation and mental/physical preparedness, and we didn't have a tour bus or fancy hotel rooms, but if you love to play, you do what you have to do.

I liked being on the road. I never went for more than 4-6 wks. at a time without getting home for at least a few days. The worst thing about it (for a person who lives alone) was not being able to have an animal.
It's been awhile but, I still have a hard time with thing like remembering trash pickup day. The same day? Every week? What a concept!

its not what we thought it would be -EVER-its crooked-political-destroys relationships-all your 'family' is entitled to your money-be 'taken care of' people knocked on our door with their hand out all the time-we were robbed-followed-threatened-people faked their mothers cancer so they could get a donation!!!!!! It goes on and on-we divorced and I wrote a book-on my recovery from all sorts of garbage-and hopefully the young people who 'want to be rich and famous' take a look

I have seen enough musicians stumble into the club where we see bands totally wrecked by 9 hour drives to know exactly what touring can do to a band and its not pretty.

I turned and walked away after 5 1/2 years of that life. Sure I had a great time, made and saved a lot of money. The hardest part was after the tour the drive across the country to do returns. These people do become your family. Holidays were the worst ! Driving across the country with a truck full of band gear, pulling into a truck stop on Christmas Day is not my idea of fun. I fully understand this article from a former truck driver in the music business

Very true if there's no balance. Touring is fucking hard work. We wouldn't do it if we didn't love it but that doesn't mean it's easy.

you're living the dream, you're doing what you love, you are way more fortunate than 95% of the worlds population who have shitty jobs they hate and you have the stupidity of complain about having anxiety, insomnia and failed relationships? Fuck man I'd kill to be on tour! If musicians complain about their "dark side" of touring then they do not deserve to be touring whatsoever, leave that for someone who has the true passion of playing live music no matter what. Sorry but this kind of things just make me furious, there are so many young musicians like me who are dying to get their chance to play big audiences and are willing to leave anything behind and sacrifice anything to make our dream come true, so these complaining people just make me sick.
