After six years as the Director of Public Policy at the Maine Women’s Lobby and the Maine Women’s Policy Center, Laura Harper has begun a new chapter as a lobbyist with Moose Ridge Associates. While we'll miss Laura, we also wish her well in this exciting new opportunity. Laura has been a champion on the causes that matter to Maine women and families, and in leaving she said,
"For the past six years it has been an honor to be your voice at the State House, to work alongside you in solidarity for women and worker’s rights, to fight the civil rights battle of our generation and ultimately win marriage equality for all Maine families. Together we’ve filled the Hall of Flags countless times with women, families, advocates, faith leaders, and rowdy voters. We’ve beat back attacks on child labor protections, unemployment insurance, reproductive privacy, voting rights, and our own human rights act. We’ve passed increases to the minimum wage, improvements to the family medical leave act, expanded equal pay protections, created a system for getting harmful chemicals out of toys and household products, strengthened stalking and strangulation laws, and finally made domestic violence a crime."

‼️‼️‼️ "Paid family and medical leave supports workers and families and is a critical investment in the strength and equity of our economy. President Biden’s American Families Plan will:
Create a national comprehensive paid family and medical leave program. The program will ensure workers receive partial wage replacement to take time to bond with a new child, care for a seriously ill loved one, deal with a loved one’s military deployment, find safety from sexual assault, stalking, or domestic violence, heal from their own serious illness, or take time to deal with the death of a loved one. It will guarantee twelve weeks of paid parental, family, and personal illness/safe leave by year 10 of the program, and also ensure workers get three days of bereavement leave per year starting in year one. The program will provide workers up to $4,000 a month, with a minimum of two-thirds of average weekly wages replaced, rising to 80 percent for the lowest wage workers. "
