#NDAM Portraits of Possible: Meet Elvis
“I would love to hear my doctor say ‘you don’t have diabetes anymore.’ That’s what I’m fighting for. When I was diagnosed five years ago, my A1C was 14 and my glucose was 550mg/dL. It wasn’t until we decided to start a family that I knew I needed to change my lifestyle. That’s when I started learning more about the science of nutrition and creative ways to cook low carb.
“My numbers started getting a little better, so I started exercising. But, when I walked into a commercial gym for the first time, I was already sweating before I got in the door, and I already drank all my water before I started exercising. When I got on the treadmill, my feet hurt so bad because of the neuropathy pain. Just looking around at everyone who seemed healthy and looked a certain way, it kind of made me feel embarrassed and ashamed of myself.
“Then I stopped going to the gym because I knew I couldn’t keep up with the rest of the people there. I knew I needed to stay active in some way, so when they opened a boxing gym in the area I live in, I saved up my money and walked in one day.
"As soon as I put those gloves on, I couldn’t take them off. I loved the way they felt. I loved the coaching, the training, and the work ethic behind it. I don’t compete. I just train, but everyone looks at me like I’m a warrior because I’m fighting for something. I’m fighting for my health.”

Portraits of Possible: Meet Rick
“I neglected my health for a long time, and it was such a source of failure and pain. I could never get on top of my weight.
"It affected the way I saw myself. It affected my confidence. I came to equate it with a character flaw.
"The first step for me was about acknowledging where I was, opening up a conversation with my future self, and giving myself permission to dream about how it could be better.
"Now looking back as my future self, that’s the step I’m most proud of. I can’t overemphasize the spiritual importance for me. I’m not a different person because I lost 90 pounds. I lost the weight because I rediscovered my core identity and started moving into it.
"The dietary changes I made worked, but in order to maintain them, I had to make them my new normal.”
