NYTWA STATEMENT ON MUSLIM BAN:

Professional drivers are over 20 times more likely to be murdered on the job than other workers. By sanctioning bigotry with his unconstitutional and inhumane executive order banning Muslim refugees from seven countries, the president is putting professional drivers in more danger than they have been in any time since 9/11 when hate crimes against immigrants skyrocketed.

Our 19,000-member-strong union stands firmly opposed to Donald Trump's Muslim ban. As an organization whose membership is largely Muslim, a workforce that's almost universally immigrant, and a working-class movement that is rooted in the defense of the oppressed, we say no to this inhumane and unconstitutional ban.

We know all too well that when government programs sanction outright Islamophobia, and the rhetoric of hate is spewed from the bully pulpit, hate crimes increase and drivers suffer gravely. Our Sikh and other non-Muslim brown and black members also suffer from anti-Muslim violence.

Today, drivers are joining the protest at JFK Airport in support of all those who are currently being detained at the airport because of Trump's unconstitutional executive order. Drivers stand in solidarity with refugees coming to America in search of peace and safety and with those who are simply trying to return to their homes here in America after traveling abroad. We stand in solidarity with all of our peace-loving neighbors against this inhumane, cruel, and unconstitutional act of pure bigotry.

I had to have surgery in NYC twice. Every time I took a taxi to or from JFK, I felt so cared for and welcomed. One driver even bought me a coffee when I was upset by the treatment I received as a disabled woman and the airline wouldn't get my wheelchair for me. These drivers are ever grateful for the life they have been blessed with here and aren't embarrassed to show it. If we could all be so proud and happy as them! I support them and their boycott 1000000%. I'm so proud of their caring and compassion. They have honor and resolve like most groups of this size only dream of. Bless the drivers and their Union! You are loved! ✊🏼

Guys, these countries are in the state of war. There are many terrorists there. Whom do you think they terror there? In Syria, Turkey, Iraq? They threaten with terror other muslims!!! They kill them! They behead them! They rape them! Now. Russians, Iranians, and Turks (yep, they are alies now), are getting rid of them. Where do you think those terrorists will go hiding? To Saudi Arabia ? No... They are smart. They will go here! To your neighourhood, dear fellow americans of different races and religion. And that what Mr. Trump is preventing.
Support Trump!

Kudos to NY taxi drivers! While they could be out charging fares, they stand in solidarity with others who, like many of them, aspire to settlling into a life that represents promise for them and their families. I, along with members of my family, have worked directly with recently arrived immigrants and visa holders. They are proud to have been permitted entry to the US. I recall working with green-card holders who had been professors in their countries of origin accepting jobs as janitors (or taxi drivers) in the US. They left family and friends in the hope of living in a country where, if they worked hard in any available job, they and their children would prosper. And in doing so, they have contributed to the prosperity of all Americans.

Being a former union member and organiser of AFSCME at Rutgers in NJ back in the 80s and 90s, I must stand in solidarity of your decision. I am an UBER driver in Virginia but was unaware of Uber CEO becoming a member on Trumps Advisory Board. In light of this information and that I did feel a since of subtle discrimination, I will be terminating my partnership with Uber. Lyft is in Virginia. I'll seek employment with their company. Thank you for keeping people informed so we can make better life choices.

If the administration wants to tighten up vetting, they need to be aware of how it's done and who is here. A review isn't a monumental issue, but the way this has been impleimented is. The executive order was so badly executed that it's another embarrassment to the administration and to the country as a whole. Persons who had all of their identification, passports and visas in order, got stuck in this mess with no notification prior to embarking had little recourse to modify scheduled travels prior to arrival. This is a justified complaint.

In NY workers tell us how they want to be treated. Any deal or bill that does not involve uncompromised workers is not one the legislature can or should support. The industry is a duopoly and we won’t allow these tech giants to roll back workers’ rights.
