Questions for "Grandmaster" Jay by A-tone, the Hip Hop Historian
1. Why did you pretend to be performing DJ Jazzy Jeff's routine in the DJ Beamz Youtube video?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kPX3oUMmaDE
Why not use your own “legendary” routines?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E7OUmxvY2u0
Ans: Your hand movements match the Jeff routine exactly. Which means that you knew that it was his routine that you were mimicking. It appears you did not have enough confidence in your own body of work to use any of it for the DJ Beamz video.
2. You saying that you were "arrogant" makes sense, but "millionaire with 8 grammys"?
http://youtu.be/H-Y4wjJb4AM?t=1m10s
Ans: Grammy.com reveals 0 grammies for you and 2 grammies for Jazzy Jeff.
3. In what capacity were you signed to Sugarhill Records?
http://youtu.be/H-Y4wjJb4AM?t=3m7s
And who signed you? Sugar Hill Records was owned by Sylvia & Joe Sr. in 1981. Not by their son “Joey”.
Ans: Your bio says that this "offer" was refused by your mother. There is no evidence of an offer ever being made.
4. While naming acts that you had "sign" with "Joey" and Sugarhill Records, you said the following:
“Then we brought in Cold Crush…”
http://youtu.be/H-Y4wjJb4AM?t=3m52s
Ans: "I do not know him. He must not have done his job because we never signed with Sugarhill." --Easy A.D. of the legendary Cold Crush Brothers
5. You said there were “10 years of Hip Hop” before 1979 [year that both "Rapper's Delight" & "King Tim III were released]?
http://youtu.be/H-Y4wjJb4AM?t=4m20s
Ans: Hip Hop [the DJing Element] started in 1973 with DJ Kool Herc. Not in 1969.
6. You said that “Jam Master Jay...came came out in ‘84”?

Ans: The first MC was Keith Cowboy who was with Grandmaster Flash in 1977 in the Bronx.

http://youtu.be/H-Y4wjJb4AM?t=5m8s
Ans: From MTV.com: "It was a combination of doing customized tapes and then there were the tapes I used to do of my performances with my group at regular parties," explained Grandmaster Flash, who started making his tapes in 1973 and credits himself, Kool Herc and Afrika Bambaataa as the originators of mixtapes.
9. You said: "Y'all remember [Let Me] Clear My Throat? Me & my man, [DJ] Kool, that’s us”?
http://youtu.be/H-Y4wjJb4AM?t=5m25s

25. An MC, that says he knows you, says you’re from Richmond, VA and that you accused him of stealing your name.
From Jay Quan: Throwback Thursday true story... Concerning Grandmaster Jay. He is from Richmond , VA. He is a legendary DJ here , and he won the local Kiss 96 Master Mix competition with 2 incredible mixes. That's what I can verify as fact on him.....I was in a group called the Too Def crew Crew and my name was Mic Master Jay. This was 1987. We were doing an outdoor show.....probably Byrd park and Grandmaster Jay comes UP ON THE STAGE during our performance. After we performed, of course words and threats were exchanged and he says that I stole his name and that people are coming to him with congrats on his new record (my record) and that he doesn't appreciate it....we exchanged more words and I told him that I was Mic Master J before I heard his mixes and I asked (comically) what about Jam Master Jay. He told me (very seriously) that he had warned JMJ and that lawsuits were forthcoming. Anyhow...... We exchanged words over the years at different venues and in 1988 I changed my name to JayQuan and forgot it all..... So the current controversy is very interesting/entertaining to me. I again can confirm that dude is a legend HERE in VA. I can confirm nothing further....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GjuSM-ALB4c
26. Do you know or battled DJ Cash Money? Oh by the way , i do not know this guy...” – DJ Cash Money
It appears that "Grandmaster" Jay is a notable figure in the history of Hip Hop in Richmond, VA and is good personal friends with DJ Kool. Other than that, he has staked his future on lying about his past for the sake of "marketing" himself. No amount of notoriety or fame is worth selling your soul. -- A-tone, the Hip Hop Historian
