Our School Community Under Attack From Within

Jenny Fitzgerald CVUSD School Board
“If you do not like public schools, boycott them.” – Mike Dunn
The event at Godspeak this morning, with former CVUSD School Board trustee Mike Dunn and current trustee Sandee Everett as main speakers, was an assault on the integrity of our public schools (and charter and private schools) – those in general and those right here in our district. This was perhaps best exemplified by Dunn’s allegation that our public schools target Christians by indoctrinating children with an anti-Christian agenda in the same way that “the state” used public schools in Germany to promote discrimination against Jews. This disgusting and blatantly dishonest statement is just one of many attacks launched against our district, its teachers, and school community.
What’s Our Agenda?
According to Dunn and Everett’s presentation today, our public schools promote an anti-Christian agenda. However, the fact that our schools do not express approval or deference to a particular religion is not anti-Christian as Dunn and Everett claim. Our schools are secular environments as required by our US Constitution, and in the same way they do not promote Christianity, our schools similarly do not promote Buddhism, Judaism, Islam or atheist views. Ours is a school district filled with students from many different backgrounds and it strives to be welcoming and open to students of all races, religions, and orientations. That public school curriculum does not express agreement or deference to a particular set of religious beliefs and values does not make it antagonistic to that religion; rather, it is the text book example of what happens when church and state are appropriately separated. If you want to teach your kids that it’s not appropriate for Heather to have two mommies (as discussed in the book Heather Has Two Mommies, attacked by the speakers), it is your right to do so. But at school, Heather and Heather’s two mommies are going to be welcome and feel safe.
In Good Company
Not to be singled out, many others were included in the attacks - the ACORN, charter schools (specifically including MATES and Bridges), private schools (specifically including Carden, Living Oaks, Seventh Day Adventist, and Oaks Christian), public home schools, the California Teachers Association, and CVUSD teachers to name a few. According to Dunn and Everett, the expense of private schools are a problem and charters are an issue because they must follow CA education laws (such as providing sexual health education and HIV prevention education).
Not in Our Neighborhood
AB493 featured prominently in the presentations and was identified as a problem because, if passed, public and charter schools will be required to provide training to teachers and certificated employees of grades 7-12 for the support of LGBTQ+ students and strategies to support these students to improve the overall school climate. Please see the following link for the factually correct description of the bill, rather than the false and misleading information presented by Dunn: https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=201920200AB493
This opened perhaps the most troubling part of today’s presentation, where it was made clear that the well-being of our LGBTQ+ students simply does not matter as much as others. With so much talk about protecting students from triggering events, dismissing evidence demonstrating verbal, physical, and online harassment of LGBTQ+ students – which has resulted in many contemplating suicide – struck me as the most heartbreaking form of hypocrisy. https://www.sacbee.com/news/politics-government/capitol-alert/article226211595.html
This hypocrisy was at its highest form when Everett stated that we (CVUSD) don’t need training because, although you may have heard otherwise from the ACORN, no evidence has been presented that gender non-conforming kids are “often” the targets of bullying in our area. No regard was given to the abundant research which “has shown that over half of LGBTQ pupils who are harassed/assaulted in school do not report these incidents to school staff…” (see same link above). Everett further stated that “if the number of incidents is small, then it can be resolved easily through discipline of the bully.” No explanation was provided as to why her recommended approach is to wait for incidents of bullying and harassment to occur (assuming they are reported in the first place) before taking action through discipline, when the damage would have already been done. No explanation was provided as to why proactively addressing these concerns through training to avoid – or at least decrease - potential incidents of bullying and harassment and the harmful effects they have on LGBTQ+ students is not appropriate. Based on the overarching content of today’s presentation, I suspect we all know why she is taking this position.
What the Event Wasn’t
“Providing community leadership and advocacy on behalf of students, the district's educational program, and public education in order to build support within the local community and at the state and national levels.” (Board Bylaw 9000 regarding the role of Board Members).
Board members often speak out in favor/against certain policies/programs. But the fact that a current board member was a main speaker in an event that bashed our public schools – and had virtually nothing positive to say about them in spite of all the amazing things they offer and the many improvements made over the past year- is concerning to say the least. I thought perhaps Everett was going to announce that she was done with public schools, but Dunn endorsed Everett’s re-election at the event.
I see non-public school options as necessary for students in our community and personally value the diversity of thought and educational opportunity they offer. I attended an event last year put on for families wanting to learn more about local alternate educational programs. It was amazing! Many different programs were represented, including some of the district’s alternate education programs. I walked away with knowledge that will help us better serve the students in our district. While some of the speakers of home school offerings at today’s event focused on discussing the differences and positive offerings (which I appreciated learning about), it was completely overshadowed by the efforts to target our public schools for serving certain groups of students. Recognizing the benefit of building positive partnerships among different educational organizations in our community (particularly as some kids come in and out of district schools) truly puts the kids in our community first. Pitting one type of educational setting against all others holds no benefit for our kids or community. It serves only to create divisiveness where none should exist. Rather, we should support each other in finding the right fit for our kids and as board members, we should work to ensure that our public schools are the very best they can be.
The Closing
“All Students Should Be Treated with Kindness, Respect and Dignity” - This phrase sat next to Everett’s campaign logo on the bottom of each of her slides like a legal disclaimer for the information Everett provided that completely contradicted this notion. Some in the audience had clearly come to learn about alternatives to public school education and listened in a respectful manner. Yet Everett said nothing when some in the audience laughed out loud during a slide referencing the books Sparkle Boy and Heather Has Two Mommies, then again when a slide discussing gender identity was discussed, and yet again at a slide defining the term “non-binary”. But – kindness, respect and dignity…
The closing by another individual included brief phrases like “Jesus loves the LGBTQ community” and “we are inclusive.” This is what I would expect to hear from those that follow the teachings of Jesus, but throwing in phrases like that as a footnote to a program filled with undue attacks and hate does not negate the real message. One of the things about having a child who has special needs, is that I have become someone who feels deeply for all children who are seen as “different” and their families. I feel it as though I am the parent of that child – the parent that loves and adores and accepts that child for all they are…and the parent who feels the pain of those who do not support that child or who say that they do, but act very differently. Today, I was sitting listening as though I have a child who has identified as LGBTQ+. I was angered – but even more so, my heart ached. I realized part way through that I had tears in my eyes. Can you imagine being in the room as a LGBTQ+ parent or student? I remained the entire time, not because I wanted to stay but because I could not leave.
I anticipate receiving backlash for this post – online, in letters to the ACORN, and in other formats. I recognize that some will be turned off and I willingly accept that risk. Our representatives rarely agree with everything we believe, but I hope that if I had elected someone to work to ensure the best needs of students were being met at school, they would accept this risk for our children.
James 4.12: There is only one lawgiver and judge, and he is able to save and to destroy. But you who judge your neighbor, who are you?
I’ve been to church a lot in my lifetime – a lot. Never once has it felt like such a contrast than it did today as I sat in a place of worship while hatred and vitrial were spewed about children.

Jenny Fitzgerald CVUSD School Board
I also had the unfortunate opportunity to be told by Dunn that the rise in STDs and AIDS are both a direct consequence of the promotion of moral relativism (the belief that no standpoint is uniquely privileged over all others) by secular humanists (those who believe that human beings are capable of being ethical and moral without religion or a god). Yikes! Clearly those of us who do not agree with Dunn’s specific beliefs have a lot of explaining to do.

Jenny Fitzgerald CVUSD School Board
Then I learned from Dunn that “as the family unit consisting of a mother and father disintegrates, so does America.” So those of you with other types of family units – single parents, divorced parents, widowed parents, grandparents who are parenting, same sex/gender parents…you’ve got the disintegration of our entire country on your backs.

Cynthia Mayling
Well done Jenny. Thank you for everything you do. Nothing about what transpired at Godspeak today was “Christian”

Thank you for recapping Jenny. I can't imagine how hard it must have been to sit through that presentation, but your words are important and so true. Thank you for representing all of our students' best interests ... not just a select few.

Isn’t Godspeak the church of councilman Rob McCoy?

Katie Katie
Thank you so much, @[700924070:2048:Jenny Hughes Fitzgerald] for your service. And more importantly, your empathy. You’d think a school counselor would know more than anyone that the suicide rate among these groups is higher than any other and simply knowing someone accepts them has been shown to significantly reduce that risk. How can you pro-port to advocate for children if you do not accept them as they are? That’s my favorite part of teaching public school: you don’t get to cherry pick your kids like you do in private education. You get a room full of different, and deserving little humans who need and deserve our love, respect, and understanding. Thank you for advocating for all our kids.

Thank you, Jenny, for the honesty, open-hearted perspective, and commitment to communication you bring to the board. And thank you for going into the lion's den Everett, Dunn & McCoy (as host) created this morning. You are as brilliantly suited to public service as the three of them are not.

Jess Weihe
yup.

Sharon Beck
Thank you Jenny for posting this and for speaking up. That took courage and I am so grateful to you for doing that. You have integrity and care about all students including LGBTQ students. The Williams Institute at UCLA reported the following: " A new study investigating gender expression and victimization of youth ages 13-18 found that the most gender nonconforming students reported higher levels of being bullied and were more likely to report missing school because they felt unsafe." (March 2018).

Dorothy Hatfield
It really bothers that he thinks this way and must have thought that when he was on the board so did he do things to encourage people going outside CVUSD? And For a sitting board member to be part of such a panel... this has to change.

Linda Swanson
Dorothy Hatfield I don’t understand it. How can a school board member even take part? Unacceptable

Karen Sher
Thank you @[700924070:2048:Jenny Hughes Fitzgerald] for your courage and honesty and for stepping up to be the change you wish to see!

JoHanna Jones
So he is actively working against the community he is supposed to represent in order to push his own religious agenda. He is willing to take money away from public schools by supporting a boycott. I have never supported him yet am quite surprised that this act is not grounds to be asked to leave city council.

John Noble
Wow, he has really lost it.

Sharon Debidour
Thank you for this excellent summary. Everett and McCoy are actively sabotaging our community and our public schools and should both resign or be voted out at the first opportunity. Everett needs to be censured.

Bella Robakowski
When first I heard about this event, I felt upset that this madness was continuing in our community and helpless that with one week left there is little I can really do to help combat it... but reading this made me remember that I’m leaving the district in THE BEST HANDS and how grateful I am for you!!

Michael Pruneau
This perspective is terrifying! School is not the place for religion and family values. That is the church and home respectively. Let’s focus on improving education in our schools.

Susan Santangelo
I am so glad the families of CVUSD have you there to fight for them. There is a special place in hell for those who spew bigoted hate and vitriol at children.

Pete Peters
Well done Jenny Fitzgerald, you are brave

Rachael Agranoff Brusseau
Thank you Jenny for your dedication. We are lucky to have you represent for all our students.

Steve Nash
Thank you, Ms. Fitzgerald. Although I live in Oxnard, what happens over the hill affects us all. Your letter knows no geographic boundaries as it applies to everybody, everywhere. McCoy and his cabal of Christian Shariaists are marshalling their forces and coming for us all.
Inclusivity? Not on your life! Just say "No!" to this type of hate and intolerance.

THANK YOU @[700924070:2048:Jenny Hughes Fitzgerald] for your diligence, strength of character, and your advocacy for children. All children! I’m sick over this. This breech of trust by a public school board member is something that we cannot, and will not, tolerate in our (OSA) program’s communications. We will continue to ensure (even more so now) that our conversations with parents re. alternative options for learning highlight the many public options that welcome all students. Just unbelievable. All hands on deck in NP for next year’s election. 😡

Lori Peters

Reading this has confirmed what I already knew: CVUSD is very lucky to have you.

Thank you Jenny! It’s clear that they are the ones who are intolerant. Everett needs to be censured! Also if I were her I would not be hitching my wagon to Dunn since he was so roundly trounced in the last election

Joyce Handman Miller
Thank you so much, Jenny. As a retired CVUSD teacher and BTSA Program Facilitator, I find Sandee’s behavior reprehensible, offensive and, frankly, more than a little insane. She clearly has never spoken to the district’s teachers.

Robyn Brady
Thank you for protecting our students!

Lucia Lemieux
Thank you, Jenny, for speaking out so eloquently. I am enraged and determined to do more than ever to promote the safety of my LGBTQ students. One thing that is absolutely necessary is to have caring and trained GSA advisors at the high schools (and perhaps even the middle schools). At one of our comprehensive high schools, the advisor is totally "hands off" and at the other, there has not been a functioning GSA for a few years, probably because of the religious leanings of the former principal. This should not be happening in today's world. We need to get Sandee off the board and back preaching to her stake where she belongs. Dunn needs to be mindful and realize that those who live in glass houses should not cast the first stones. My experience is those that protest too much usually have an underlying personal fear of something in themselves. This too shall pass. It has to.

Desireé Goble
Thank you so much Mrs. Fitzgerald! Greatly appreciate all your efforts to ensure all of our children are respected, treated equally and with dignity! God Bless you!!!

I am just in shock that Mike Dunn and Sandee Everett are rekindling the attack on a religious philosophy minority and scapegoating all of the nation's ills on Secular Humanism. They feel perfectly at ease attacking a philosophy as old as the age of enlightenment and using the bible as a weapon to fulfill their agenda.

So many lies here miss Fitzgerald. This was recorded why embarrass yourself? And why use the acorn as authority on anything if you are trying to prove a point? May as well quote the Inquirer it's just as credible. Facts were shared, facts you dont like. However just because you dont like something, doesnt make it not true.
The integrity of public schools was questioned because they are a threat to the family unit.
To quote a wise man , "the decay of the family unit, is the direct cause to the decay of America " . This year I have removed my son from public school and advocate to many to do the same.
Sandee supports public schools and believes them to be great so do I. Their leaders however , are not both proponents of family-teacher-student team needed to best educate the child

oh yeah you are funny. Jenny is a person of very high integrity and you are a fear monger who will call anyone who doesn’t promote your hateful agenda a liar. Seen enough of your posts and comments to make this judgment.

Ashley Louise
If you truly represented public school for all and diversity, you would have attended the conference with a genuine interest what community concerns were. Then you could more fairly represent the needs of others. But as the current board and its followers example, Christian's, anyone of faith, or anyone who doesn't believe in the sexualizing of children aren't part of diverse populations right?

Me too. And my kids.

I look forward to the video being released. Having spoken to at least five different individuals who attended, including one whom recorded as well, Jenny's note about what she observed and heard appear to be in line with the same concerns I've heard expressed about the note of this forum, and how utterly and completely inappropriate it was for your wife to participate in badspeakind the public school district she serves.

Craig Everett
Excellent. I also look forward to the video. She only spoke positively about the district. In fact, one person reported that she will be enrolling her child in the district because of Sandee's pitch for CVUSD.

Jenny Fitzgerald CVUSD School Board
@[709007956:2048:Craig Everett] First, thank you for using your real account and not a fake twitter profile. Regarding the video, that’s actually quite fantastic. I also look forward to public consumption of the content and to comparing the entire video (not just Sandee’s portion) to my audio recording and screen shots of each slide. If you have any issues getting the video up I am happy to make my audio file available as a substitute. Let me know if I can help.
To your laughable claim that I am in any way being deceptive or misleading, I can only assume you are relying on the very carefully crafted generic disclaimers Trustee Everett included to support your statement. Setting aside that those were obviously included to help soften the blows suffered from backlash received when the original invitation to the event was released (you know, the one that said our children are being taught a “progressive anti-god, anti-American pagan agenda in our local public schools”), those disclaimers don’t wash away all of the other hurtful and destructive content that was the crux. For Trustee Everett to say that some of her research and opinions differ from Mr. Dunn’s, that we have many wonderful teachers in our schools, that no student should ever be bullied for any reason, and that transgender students are “wonderful kids,” all while excoriating teachers, telling LGBTQ+ students that we shouldn’t talk about them out of deference to those whose beliefs label such students as immoral, and attempting to brand public school education and proposals to build bridges amongst its diverse population as anti-Christian propaganda is beyond disingenuous.
Context is everything Craig. Our community is too used to these antics not to clearly see that those intentional sound bites added at the end of Trustee Everett’s presentation do absolutely nothing to negate the fact that a sitting school board member willfully participated in an event bashing our public schools, they do nothing to negate that she was endorsed by Mike Dunn in the same speech (which she certainly didn’t turn down or refuse) where he spoke about boycotting our public schools, and they don’t blindside us to the fact that, in context, those “wonderful teachers” she references are only those who agree with Trustee Everett’s beliefs.
Empty and generic disclaimers do nothing to negate the fact that Trustee Everett alleges that these “wonderful children” aren’t being bullied enough to require more than mere punishment of the bully after the fact. You do not get to tell LGBTQ+ youth that they are wonderful while simultaneously telling them that their gender identity is fiction and therefore cannot be recognized at school. The misinformation spread about LGBTQ+ youth is the same propaganda that has put the lives of so many of those youth in danger, due to mental health struggles and suicide. I will not ignore that message - the one that impacts our schools and students- simply because Trustee Everett sought to protect her own self when she made clear that our LGBTQ+ youth don’t deserve the same.
I sincerely encourage you to read up on the abundant data and facts about suicide risk in this population of students. Here is one helpful link: https://www.thetrevorproject.org/resources/preventing-suicide/facts-about-suicide/

@[1582868182:2048:Ashley Huizenga] Hi- Are you asking that I join the private Conservative Moms of Conejo Valley FB group?

Ashley Louise
Not by any means
That wouldn't make sense you would only want to go to find pretend ammo to hurt your far more capable opponents. The link shares the truth about how the meeting went. You have people applauding you when they weren't there you do not represent the needs of all children and it is sad that you hold your standards this way

@[1582868182:2048:Ashley Huizenga] I asked as I wasn't sure what your comment meant. Also, I shared all the slides I was able to get from the first half of the program earlier today so that others can view (it's in a separate post if you would like to look through them). I will continue working hard to ensure our students are put first. Thanks

Stephanie Barrus
@[1522730304480224:274:Jenny Fitzgerald for CVUSD School Board] You don't have pictures of all the slides from the first half posted. The LOMSAA presentation slides followed Mrs. Everett's in the program. Why didn't you take pictures of those as well? You only posted pictures from Mr. Dunn's and Mrs. Everett's slides. It appears to me you came to only make examples of them.

@[10049809:2048:Stephanie Turley Barrus] Hi- Thank you for pointing out LOMSAA. I have added their reference to my post with slides.

I must comment that Jessica is a pretty gutsy lady. You know, to repeatedly, publicly call attorney Jenny Fitzgerald a liar.😆

Heather Buchanan Spohr
This is bonkers. I can’t believe it.

Jon Cummings
How much guts does it take to hit the "paste" button repeatedly?

Lori Jacobs
@[1218897327:2048:Jon Cummings] should have put a 😆 on that!

Ashley Louise
And did you stay for the second half?

Brian Weihe
You think your wife being at an event that said the schools were anti-God/anti-America, and was advocating for parents to leave the district, was somehow helpful to the enrollment issue, and was "building bridges"? You're such a disingenuous fraud.

Tobi Ruth Love
Very well stated. Thank you!

Tobi Ruth Love
I know I tend to be horribly naive about some things. But, wouldn't it be better if we are teaching the children about religions (not teaching a religion) to approach it by teaching what the religions have in common, for example, most have a version of "that which is hurtful to you do not do to others"? If we can get across the fact that all people should be judged by their character alone, not race, religion, gender, or anything else, we could come a long way in combatting prejudice and fear. It is important to teach children that there are differences in people and families and everyone deserves respect but, perhaps, we are not concentrating on what is most important: being a person of good character and judging (if we must judge) others by their character.

You can take the word of a hate-filled, lying, hypocrite or you can watch the video for yourself. I don't care if there are a million positive comments to Ms. Fitzgerald's rant, it does not make it true. If you want the truth, if you want to have an opinion about Trustee Everett, watch the video of her presentation at the forum and then decide for yourself. One of the greatest demonstrations of ignorance is for a person to comment on something they know nothing about.

Timothy Cooley
Here is the uncut, unedited Trustee Everett speech from August 10th. https://youtu.be/HC2s317_z6k Watch it and judge for yourself. "Trustee" Fitzgerald should be stripped of her title because she cannot be "Trusted". Fitzgerald is being put on notice that the good people of the Conejo Valley will not put up with her lies and deceit. Fitzgerald has managed to actually do what she was falsely accusing Trustee Everett of doing. Fitzgerald has brought disgrace to the school board and dishonored the oath she made when elected. Study Fitzgerald's social media rant then watch the video. Truth is truth.

Laura McLean
Nice try dude.

Laura McLean
Thanks, Ashley, for admitting that this was, in fact, an attack on our public schools which a sitting board member happily participated in.
Which is exactly what Jenny said.
Your honesty is refreshing.

I've watched the full video of SE's remarks this morning. That video alongside Dunn's hateful slides confirms that the Conejo Valley did the right thing when we elected Jenny and a new majority to the board.

Ashley Louise
Laura McLean ? You all hear what you want to hear.

Timothy Cooley
"Nice try dude" That's it? That's the extent of your logic? That's your argument? I guess what you are saying is Nice try dude but you're not going to get me to watch that video. You're not going to get me to abandon my comrade Fitzgerald, You're not going to get me to look at truth and disregard my loyalty to the radical agendas of Conejo Together, Indivisible Conejo, George Soros and all the other anti-American causes I'm involved with. Are you so weak that you can't even go to the source of this debate and see for yourself?

Jess Weihe
I'm glad that the video was finally published in full regarding Sandee's presentation. It has helped tremendously in affirming that Jenny's recap of the event and Ms. Everett's role in it were accurate based on what I watched this morning.

@[100003262786115:2048:Jess Weihe] they literally don’t hear what we do. The intolerance is so completely embedded in their brains, and hangs out with the equally instilled belief that, as Christians, they love everyone. And they use the justification ‘love the sinner, hate the sin’.
But they use that so freely they don’t ask themselves- love them how? How does one generally show love? What should that love look like? It’s just lip service.
There are plenty of things I don’t like about certain groups. One that comes to mind is the oppression of women in so many cultures and religions.
But I don’t tell them they must hide their identity or opinions from anyone! That my children should not hear or see them until I feel I want to tell them! I taught my children what I believe and why at home, and I didn’t worry that exposure to people unlike us in some way when they were away from home.
When you love someone, you show them respect. And you don’t do or say things that you know will make them feel unwelcome in society and so broken that they should hide from others.
