Statement on the Current Health Care Debate

As more Americans delve into the disturbing details of the nationalized health care plan that the current administration is rushing through Congress, our collective jaw is dropping, and we’re saying not just no, but hell no!
The Democrats promise that a government health care system will reduce the cost of health care, but as the economist Thomas Sowell has pointed out, government health care will not reduce the cost; it will simply refuse to pay the cost. And who will suffer the most when they ration care? The sick, the elderly, and the disabled, of course. The America I know and love is not one in which my parents or my baby with Down Syndrome will have to stand in front of Obama’s “death panel” so his bureaucrats can decide, based on a subjective judgment of their “level of productivity in society,” whether they are worthy of health care. Such a system is downright evil.
Health care by definition involves life and death decisions. Human rights and human dignity must be at the center of any health care discussion.
Rep. Michele Bachmann highlighted the Orwellian thinking of the president’s health care advisor, Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, the brother of the White House chief of staff, in a floor speech to the House of Representatives. I commend her for being a voice for the most precious members of our society, our children and our seniors.
We must step up and engage in this most crucial debate. Nationalizing our health care system is a point of no return for government interference in the lives of its citizens. If we go down this path, there will be no turning back. Ronald Reagan once wrote, “Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we’ll ever see on this earth.” Let’s stop and think and make our voices heard before it’s too late.

An agency that help bring about some of the financial crisis due to poor oversight, and which was founded because of the Savings and Loan crisis of the late 80s. Sarah, health care is so vital to our existence and in this imperfect world we most certainly need to find ways in improving what already works for the masses, BUT, with great evidence, it's noted clearly that private insurance in spite of certain flaws, has worked. To endorse a single payer system of health care is merely a slap in the face to those that are successfully paying for their own health care and is a slap in the face for the freedom to choose.Most importantly, to endorse a single payer system of health care would consequentially result in disaster! I just lost my grandfather to pancreatic cancer and it has been the hardest thing to deal with. If there was no way of taking care of his needs it would literally shut our entire family down because of stress and sadness. Anyone who has not read the full article on Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel on his "complete lives system" should go to Lancet, you will have to register (guess to save white house snitch time) and download the article. It is based the idea of how much time and money, government and family, has been invested in children...once an adult turns 50 you drop off the cliff as the cost of care and drag, behavior modification so if you refrain from drinking that soda or eating a box of twinkies you are way ahead of chubbies, and finally those with disabilities, diseases without profitable outcomes. I beg you to read it, then ask friends, family, church members, officials and everyone else to read it. Then ask them to put down the name of a person in their family they would allow the government deciding who is worthy.

When the goverment was talking about intervening in the health care system, I was thinking more along the lines of tort reform, or competion across state lines, NOT COMPLETE GOVERNMENT TAKE OVER! Given the poor state of our economy right now, they shouldn't even be considering spending this kind of money. The "death panel" is perhaps hyperbole, but the spectre is real. Reading Dr. Emanuel's Lancet article from this past January, he advocates a system of distribution of resources which favors those roughly 20-45. Given that he is the White House policy advisor on health care, and that the focus of the reform is reducing expenditures, it is certainly reasonable to conclude that the resource which is about to become scarce is money and that the money which remains will be directed to the favored age groups. The"death panel" is not the end-of-life advisory, but the panel which determines covered procedures and reimbursements.

There is no "death panel" provision in the bill. That section refers to a voluntary discussion you and your doctor may have regarding a living will.

There's no question that this will lead to government rationing of care. There's also no question that once that happens it wil be the old and the "unproductive" that will lose their care first. Sarah I completely agree with you. I have an uncle that fought in both wars and he's like 90 or something. He has to take tons of meds and had two strokes. If we get nationalized healthcare, there'll be no question whether they'll pull the plug on him. We have to stop this before its too late. The bill sets up 45 bureaucracies that will judge whether you get treatment or not based on "communal standards" and cost benefit analysis that they have free reign to set up under whose value system?. As a mother of a disabled child, I have been concerned about govt. run health care since 2006 when I saw this train wreck coming. (Of course, I envisioned Hillary driving the train.) My son would have died when he was born if this had been in effect in 2002 under this plan, and if it passes now it might kill him yet! I hate when people use that figure of 44 or 46 million americans without health care. Remember that a large portion of that number can afford and choose not to pay for healthcare. It apparently includes a large number of illegals as well. Obviously, the people who are all for the "great" government-run health care Obama is trying to ram down our throats have not had the experiences with government health care that I have. I am old enough to remember well when we used to have quality health care. My first hip replacement was practically painless, with 5 days of quality hospital care. During my second hip replacement I was ignored by the hospital staff and when I complained I was told to complain to my congressman, not to the hospital. I just had a hip replacement revision and woke up screaming in pain from lack of enough anesthesia. I stopped breathing and was put back into ICU to be revived. I was still sent home the second day from surgery, barely alive for my poor husband to do the hospital care. Can any of you imagine how much worse the quality of our healthcare will be if the government gets control of all health care!!
