Our Fearless March Against Beijing Suppression: Hong Kong Under the Global Spotlight

Joshua Wong
Demosisto statement on 4th Anniversary of the Umbrella Movement
It has been four years since the historic evening when everything changed. Demosisto is a legacy of the Umbrella Movement, and four years on, we stand proud and true to our heritage. Student leaders, youth activism and empowerment are still at the very centre of our organization. In our past activities and commemorations, we focused on addressing post-Movement sentiment, and in particular, helplessness and frustration. This year, however, we felt the need to address the issue of the Movement’s historical narrative. Given the evasive nature of the archival authorities, we cannot rely on official documents for an accurate portrayal of this emblematic event, which a significant amount of Hong Kong people saw as their moment of political awakening. As such, to fulfill our duty to remember, we have made it our mission to ensure an accurate depiction of the 79-day Occupy Movement.
Despite the increase in suppression from the government in the past couple of years, including disqualification of lawmakers, incarceration of social activists, and banning of opposing voices by exercising articles in the Societies Ordinance. Although all our members have since been released from prison, Hong Kong society must not forget that there are still other political prisoners today, including prominent figures like Edward Leung. We might be from different ideological branches, but we have all been victim to Beijing and the Hong Kong government’s repulsive attempt to shut down opposing voices which may inspire Hong Kong people to think about possibilities beyond what we as a society have been subjected to. As a sign of solidarity, members from Demosisto have been paying visits to these prisoners to let them know that they are not alone. We have been fortunate enough to have had the public’s support during the hard times that some of our own were sent to jail, it is only fair that we support other political prisoners as well.
Demosisto Today
Demosisto has been fortunate in being able to share its journey with our friends in the media and with members of the public. We started out as a political party in 2016; and after the disqualification of Nathan Law as Demosisto’s representative in the Legislative Council, and of Agnes Chow as a by-election candidate for Law’s lost seat, it was clear that Demosisto would no longer to present its members for further Legislative Council elections. As such, Demosisto evolved from a political party into a political organization at the occasion of our second anniversary to turn our focus back onto the streets and to our city’s youth – both of which we consider to be our root.
Our media team has also changed its strategy in order to address a younger audience – not only those who are their 20’s, but also those who are younger than us, for whom Facebook is no longer the main social media platform. In order to communicate with this younger generation, we have expanded our presence to YouTube and Instagram. We also engage them in our videos and pieces, because it is not only about the voices of our own members, but that of an entire generation. A shift in audience also means a shift in our focus on policies, which is again a return to our roots – education. The anti-national education campaign and our campaign against the National Anthem Law have become some of our most important focuses in the past year. Instead of simply making formal statements and speeches regarding the issues, we went into the communities in Hong Kong and engage them in activities such as inspecting textbooks for nationalistic wordings and amendments, and marching down in street in a Winnie the Pooh costume as a satirical performance.
We also have an increased focus on our connection with the international committee, and aim to regularly update our friends and partners around the world with a monthly newsletter and established channels of communication with, in particular, our English-speaking allies.
International Advocacy
We have established connections with and travelled to eight countries in the past five months across three continents. We look forward to new friendships and partnerships in the coming year, as we continue our advocacy for the democracy and human rights of Hong KongThe message has always been based on the promises enshrined in the Sino-British Joint Declaration and the international covenants by the UN, which China as a co-signatory would do well to respect. Upcoming engagements will include an article on the Sino-American trade war, and visits to Europe, East Asia, the USA, and Australia to update our partners on the latest situation in Hong Kong, and to engage them in our human rights advocacy.
In the past year, Demosisto has noticed that there has been a rise in Chinese influence around the globe, and academics have dubbed this side of the CCP’s strategy its “sharp power”. Examples include the new accord signed between the Vatican and Beijing, which can be a grave sign for the freedom of religion within the country, in addition to the vile disrespect for human rights and basic human dignity displayed by the Chinese government in their actions in Xinjiang. As a response, Demosisto joins its allies at Civil Hub to commission a report on China’s sharp power in Hong Kong, to be launched on 26th September 2018. We are also engaging in the Universal Periodic Review on China this year in its Oct/Nov session in Geneva, which evaluates the human rights conditions in China and its sovereign areas, which would include Hong Kong, in the past four years. Demosisto has submitted an individual report, and is part of a coalition of Hong Kong NGOs. By the end of the Review, a set of recommendations will be published for China to address. The USA is also expected to invoke Global Magnitsky Act to sanction China for the heinous situation in Xinjiang.
Secretary General Joshua Wong still has his passport held by the Court, and so have not been engaged in overseas advocacy in the past few months. He has been chosen as the recipient of this year’s Lantos Peace Prize, in addition to being appointed as the honorary patron of Trinity College’s University Philosophical Society. He has therefore applied for a variation of bail conditions. The hearing will take place at 11am of 28th September 2018 (Friday).

US has become the great country again.
It has shown the world how best to deal decisively with violent protests.
China and HK, are you there?
You should learn from US and send in your troops, clobber and fire at the violent protesters.
Hongkies, are you there?
You waved the American flag. You admired and wanted American democracy.
When you demonstrate, US called you Freedom Fighters.
But now when Americans demonstrate for justice, equality and police brutality, The Duck President called them 'THUGS' and send in national guards who fired into the crowd.
And good luck migrating to US.
You will be welcomed. After all you are WHITE despite yellow skinned.
And US lapdogs UK, Canada and Australia - are you there?
You were SO NOISY on HK.
You were so righteous preaching Human rights BS.
Why are you so quiet now?
The American media, are you there?
From the eyewitness ground reports, tens of thousands are protesting.
But you reported ONLY thousands ...
And in HK, you reported protesters in the Millions!
The Americans who supported the riots in HK and hailed the rioters as heroes, are you there?
Now you have a taste of the burning and looting in your country, what are you going to do.
Will you fund your heroic American brethren like you did the Hongkies?
