An unexpected journey

Peter Jackson
It is only at the end of a shoot that you finally get the chance to sit down and have a look at the film you have made. Recently Fran, Phil and I did just this when we watched for the first time an early cut of the first movie - and a large chunk of the second. We were really pleased with the way the story was coming together, in particular, the strength of the characters and the cast who have brought them to life. All of which gave rise to a simple question: do we take this chance to tell more of the tale? And the answer from our perspective as the filmmakers, and as fans, was an unreserved ‘yes.'
We know how much of the story of Bilbo Baggins, the Wizard Gandalf, the Dwarves of Erebor, the rise of the Necromancer, and the Battle of Dol Guldur will remain untold if we do not take this chance. The richness of the story of The Hobbit, as well as some of the related material in the appendices of The Lord of the Rings, allows us to tell the full story of the adventures of Bilbo Baggins and the part he played in the sometimes dangerous, but at all times exciting, history of Middle-earth.
So, without further ado and on behalf of New Line Cinema, Warner Bros. Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Wingnut Films, and the entire cast and crew of “The Hobbit” films, I’d like to announce that two films will become three.
It has been an unexpected journey indeed, and in the words of Professor Tolkien himself, "a tale that grew in the telling."
Cheers,
Peter J

So Peter I'm sitting here watching the extended cut LOtR and in the making of disc you said "the next thing I do will be easy" hmmm 3 movie's back in middle earth not really sounding easy and BOY am I glad that you are doing this I can not wait !!! Thank you for taking such great care of Middle Earth !!!! Hue Hugs to ALL of your cast and All of your co creating staff across the board.

George Passadakis
cool!!!!!!

Andreas Birk Pedersen
I really like the idea of making one more triology. With just two movies, you could get the impression, that the 2nd movie was just about making møre money. But the story of The Hobbit is indeed very "action-concentrated" in the context, so I hope, that we can get even more details in the 3 movies. But I still can't wait!

Charles Crowley
Fantastic! Thanks!

Thomas Rettich
Awesome!

Bettina Preuss
Best news I have had in ages. Can't wait to watch all of them and the extended dvds from lotr in one session. Would have to buy a more comfortable sofa first though.

Praveen Nimmagadda
wow... cant wait to see them

Hatim Dahmany
but pete said that in the third movie he wants to show the war for dol guldur and all and i know it's about the dwarves of erebor and the elves of mirkwood but from what i heard, the war for dol guldur is around the time when frodo is on the mount doom... what i am trying to say is that bilbo had nothing to do with that war in the north cause he was in imladris

Hatim Dahmany
(imladris=rivindell

Hatim Dahmany
)

Hatim Dahmany
but still .... i can't wait to see the movie ...

Jellyfish Mon
I'll be watching this at least 3 times, sir. One in 3D, obviously. The 2nd one, with original audio (though if I can find a cinema wheree it's screened in english AND 3D, all for the best!) and to get a poster, again in 2D in my towns cinema. I'm already saving up for then!

Justice Vanpool
Bring it on! I'll buy the ticket.

Tina Juhant
even better!! can't wait!!!

Carol Kim
i like

Andrew Eijgenraam
good good three movies, the more the better. Esp. material from outside the hobbit found in Silmarilion and other Tolkien books!!

This is really exciting! I came all around the world to spend time in this wonderful country called New Zealand! LotR had a big influence on my decision to come here. Have already been to Matamata and stay in Wellington til sunday- Friday is gonna be the day when I make the Wellywood LotR movie tour to see some of the places! Would have loved to visit Lionel's house from my favor' Splattermovie but can't find any links to where it is- a miniature?
Look forward to see the THREE movies- and as Danny from Hobbiton- tours said: "Peter will make a great job!"
Thank you Mr. Jackson for being who you are and inspireing us all!

Michele Martin
Thank you Peter Jackson!!!

Giulia Volpi
Thanks, thanks, thanks!I really love your work and I know that this trilogy will be fantastic like the other.

Paul Hodek
I have heard that The Hobbit is to be three films. Is this true? I do not think that there was enough story to make three films.

Mike Schlodder
Thank you Peter Jackson! You are my hero...books I read as a child will now grace the screens only visible in my imagination!

Mark James Smith-Poelz
A plain, crisp linen "thank you" adorns this message.

Charlie Barraclough
cant wait for the hobbit

Trent Russi
Whoa.... just whoa... I'm giggling.

Brandi Harrison
I was so excited to see that Mr. Jackson and his team decided to make The Hobbit. Now the only thing that could make this better is if the production company decides to release the Films in the special extended format like they did with The Lord of The Rings trilogy.

Alicia Joy Parowski
(OMG--short for "Oh My Gandalf") :-O I think I almost just died of excitement!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :-DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

Mats Helli
I'm already hoping for and looking forward to an extended edition of these films. Can't get enough of middle earth!

Nathalie Den Braven
I'm so happy!!!! :D

Patrick Toselli
Well 3 films that's great, the content anyway ask for a longer film, I've always thought the Hobbit to be as rich in locations and characters visitited if not richer than LOTR, but the wait is going to be umberable for the Tolkien world, summer 2014 for the last part is totaly insane, how about a bit of a short cut...Please

Rohan Chitnis
That's the best news i have ever heard..Thanks..cant wait...

Ben Marshall
I am thrilled that there will be 3 hobbit movies - and the 1st is finally coming out this December

Esther Florin
I would respectifully suggest (okay, beg) that your choice for at least one of the scores to highlight the vocals of Kate Bush. If you think about for even a nanosecond, you can see how perfect a choice it is! Hoping you are well...

Larissa Raechelle
This is so exciting. I have seen the lotr trilogy more times than I can count and can't wait to add the three hobbit films to my movie marathons xx

Brenden Sultana
The road may go ever, ever on, but the films should be out already! Who hasnt already watched the lotr trilogy like a million times by now...

I really cant wait for these movies to come out (also, he has a lot more books set in middle earth than just the lord of the rings and the hobbit, i have em all *cough* ;D)

Jarrod Harvey
Can't wait...

Diana Randolph Cain
What does 48 fps mean to me? Will it be like Saving Private Ryan with hand held camera's, or will it just be a clearer picture? I really want/need to know - filming with hand held camera's make me sick. I'm tired of going to films I can't watch, wish they'd let you know before hand.

Mi Ro
I have a question according the the cast in the Hobbit Trilogy, Elros is going to be played by Robin Kerr, is the character Elros is Elrond's twin brother? If so then why dont Hugo Weaving play Elros as well if they are twins?

Daniel Hawkes
Really hope he puts the bits in with Aragorn and Gandalf where they go looking for Gollum, it would link the lord of the rings and the hobbit really well

Christian Simpson
Thanks Peter Jackson and all you wonderful people for supporting my true life novel about living a life in WELLINGTON NEW ZEALAND by the title of LOST YOUTH VOLUME 1 NEW ZEALAND as thanks to Peter Jackson, the book has now gone straight to No.1 in the best selling charts . I feel so blessed by all your kindness so thanks everyone from Christian Simpson

Erin Nicola Muller
Inspiring. Absolutely phenomenal

Jason Bratcher
I hope this means three more hours of special features as well! I think I've watched those as much as the actual movies.

Ilikea Arakaki
Do the Simarillion too!!!! I admire you Peter Jackson. You are wonderful!

Jamey Burke
More time to edit all the flaws..

Matthew Blacklock
He's just doing it for the money

Justine Kunz
Peter Jackson - you are amazing ♥ I love the work you do and I feel you love the story and the Men behind the story as much as I do - you're doing a great job and I'd like to meet you one day and tell you face to face how much I have to thank you

Nathan Krenz
have u picked a title yet

Nathan Krenz
because if it centers around the battle of the 5 armies, I think the title The Hobbit: The Union of the Three Races sounds cool

Renée Beatson
Awesome Peter & Fran!!

Jessica Christofferson
Those of you asking for The Silmariliion, have you even read it? That novel contains a few thousand years of history. It has more characters and storylines than any filmmaker would know what to do with. There is no way film could do it justice; it doesn't matter who would be the one to make them. Some things are just better left as literature. So Peter Jackson, please leave what Tolkien himself regarded as his life's great work, alone!

Ben Johnson
Thank you! This news made my day Sir!

Aaron Sidwell
haha love the way you just dropped that little thing in at the end there! just a small thing that changes the life of fans everywhere!!

Benjamin Gervet
Well it could be done as a decalogy maybe :p Of course the work behind the silmarillon is enormous butisn't it also a real challenge ?

Kevin Newcomb
without further ado, here's much more ado about nothing...

Robert Haase
The Hobbit is going to be an epic movie. After the Lord Of The Rings, and these next Hobbit movies, I would like to see Peter Jackson tackle another project that I believe only he can make happen. The Legend Of Zelda.

Lisa Marie
I can hardly wait! Your updates thrill me to no end and keep me thirsty. I am truly excited. Another journey for us all.

Eduardo Meneses
Dear Peter (now you´re a household name in my home so that´s why I simply call you Peter) THANK YOU FOR BRINGING some of MASTER TOLKIEN´S stories to live in film. Cal Lewis Lundgren
Must have been burning the midnight oil on that decision! BRAVO!!

Möbelstück Beckmann
I love your decision all way down, but PLEASE Sir JAckson, PLEASE, HAVE JONSI FROM SIGUR ROS SING ONE OF THE ENDING CREDITS SONG OF THE FILMS, PLEASEEEE!!!! :-)

Joshua Newman
So if you're really planning on making the shortest Tolkien book, a children's story, as 3 different movies, I really think that the third one, the third part should be titled "There & Back Again." That only makes sense in my mind, especially more so than having that name associated with the second movie. So if you're really going to have "There & Back Again" be the title of the second film, what will be the name of the third? Honestly, and I truly mean no offense, but how then can you think of or acquire a better name than that one of the second for the third? If that came out right. Lol

Vincent Lanza
I think the works have been brilliant

Dave Tidmas
It's good that three films are being made so you can get as much of the story on film as possible, nice one.

Benkő-Szabó Zsanett
Great news. Thank you!

Kanaan Blackburn
Up next? The Silmarillion!

Katie Allen
When I heard this.. I practically screamed with excitement.. I just had to check it was true though..and it is !! - SO HAPPY :D

Robert Eisenhardt
And sometimes you wonder how you EVER managed the journey.

Peter Solomon
Have really enjoyed your blogs and the effort you have made to take us into the film making process - if you think it needs 3 films that's fine by me. am looking forward. (A long standing LOTR & hobbit fan - read LOTR at least 13 times in teenagerhood, have enjoyed telling both stories orally to my kids. Wife unconverted!)

Michael Lindahl
Yes to the silmarillion!!

I hope to have another set of fantastic trilodgys on my shelf in 4 years time and show my kids the fantastic films that will live on through the ages.

Alex Watson

Simon Bergeron
I can hear Mr. Mark Ordesky saying "wasn't there ONE book? You should make three films, then" :)

Simon Bergeron
Will flock at the theater no matter what!

Alí CG
Great job Peter!

Courtenay O'Connell
Second film should be: SMAUG. So much about the dragon and how he came to be the keeper of the treasure and his role in the journey there and back again.

Wade Dixon
I'm so stoked that we get 3 more LOTR movies.

Sharon Lewis Hamblett
I just have one thing to say to your decision...YIPEEEEEEE! Oh, and thank you for bringing these wonderful books to life...well, life beyond our own imaginations. I guess that was more than one thing, huh?

Daragh Keogh
Will we see Aragorn and The Hunt for Gollum???

Richard Steed
Hi Sir Peter!! Very impressive. Here is another one of my videos that demonstrates the passion and awe that your filmaking has inspired me with. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wAZLX-th7ws
It's just a demo for a music video I'll be working on shortly with a very strong LOTR theme! And believe me,I didn't intend to give it a strong beard theme too,it just happened!

Carla McEwen
Yes!!!!

Stephen Hunt
The more the merrier, Peter, old chum.

Annmarie Ruszczyk Haynes
This is the best news I've heard!!!!

Dani Kettunen
Only one thing to say. If its to become 3, i want to see Aragorn somewhere in here... He has a HUGE backstory before the Fellowship, but NO MENTION of him anywhere so far.

Karen Greer
It's not that I mind them being 3 films, it's that I mind that it's going to be 3 years before we can see them all. Rrghh! Is that really because of time needed to finish it all off or is it just a marketing ploy to keep people interested? How about releasing the second one next summer and the last one next Christmas? :^)

Kevin Rockoff
Ok so great. But it's obviously because they want 3 bites at the apple. I don't believe for a second that story presentation is what sealed the deal on 3.

Martin Wißmath
I'm looking forward to the six-film extended release of the Lord of the Rings

Silvia Del Castillo Martín
So far it's lloking pretty amazing, I was a bit concerned a few months ago, I never trully believed that the magic in The LOTR could be repeated, but I think you guys did it again. I can't wait for december, 14th.

Rohit Meena
i can’t wait to see the hobbit ...i wana see aragon in next part....the king of kings.....

Lorna Shingler
Really looking forward to this one, too!

Dylan Christopher Kimmell
I'd be interested in a part in a Middle-earth film, which I am looking at the Silmarillion, which would mean I would have to include the Children of Hurin. It's amazing, But I believe this to be my dream job for my film directory... If only it were to begin soon.

Dinelka Balasuriya
Bring it on Peter Jackson! Can't wait for the 14th of December to see Middle earth once more!

Dani Kettunen
First of all, I LOVE THIS IDEA, BUT i want to see ARAGORN!!! And Second...for all of those saying it is One book into 3 movies, IT IS NOT. Part 1 and 2 are The Hobbit, with supporting content from the appendixes of The Return of the King...however the 3rd Part is entirely made up of content contained ONLY in the appendixes of RotK, and it is entirely ment to connect the Hobbit to the Fellowship, instead of just saying that there is like a 50+ year gap between the end of Hobbit and begining of Fellowship...

Robert Dagnone
This brings me back 10 years ago on Boxing Day and then 2 more years after watching LOTR in the cinema's...I'm so glad to be able to experience the magic of these films all over again...Well done mate.

Emily Holden

I am a great fan of Tolkien! Read The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings at the age of 9 and have read them many times since. Your three films based on The Lord Of the Rings were ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!!! Thansk so much for all the hard work you have put into the films. I was SOOOO thrilled when I heard you were starting on The Hobbit! I will definitely go to the cinema and buy the dvd when it comes out!

Carl Masterson
and so when will the Silmarillion come out, and how many films?

David Christie
ok it might take a wee while to see the 3 films but once the blu rays come out it will be an amazing addition to peoples collections...thank you peter and crew for your genius !!!

Katy Diffendorfer
you're a turd. Hurting animals means we won't see your movie. Killing horses, REALLY! You suck.

David Dembeck
This is ridiculous. If Jackson is going to do this for "The Hobbit", in hindsight he should have split each of the three LOTR volumes into two parts that could have stayed true to the text while still allowing him room for creative license. Allowing again for Jackson's creative license, I could see perhaps there being two parts to "The Hobbit", but not three. Three movies means he's taking the appendices and other material not in the original text, dramatizing them and either slapping them on to the end or sprinkling them within the original story. Jackson mangled the last portion of "The Return of the King" so badly that I shutter to think what he has in mind for the end of "The Hobbit".

John H Clemson
I have such a love-hate relationship with the movies. And especially the egos of the actors who say, basically, "when we were making things up, we decided to do it as Tolkien would have..." The story of LOTR is about Paradise Lost for the Hobbits who leave the Shire as innocents and then have to fight the last battle of the War of the Rings on their own territory as battle scarred warriors. "Sharky" is the snake in Eden, or was it the Ring? Merry and Pippin are made out to be such fools by Jackson at the beginning of the movie, doing the correct ending would have been a spectacular bookend moment, LOST.

John H Clemson
I hope the humor built into the Hobbit as written was enough for Jackson. We do know that he will be PC and add more roles for women. (dare he include a dwarf woman as characterized by his Gimli? Maybe he used Klingons as a model..... <smile>)

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, the following occurred:
A horse named Shanghai was hobbled (his legs were tied together so that he couldn't move) and left on the ground for three hours because he was too energetic for his rider. Afterward, in order to hide his rope burns for filming, his legs were covered with makeup and hair. Hobbling is an outright violatio...n of the American Humane Association's (AHA) guidelines.
One horse was killed and another horse was injured after being placed with two highly strung geldings, despite concerns that the geldings would be too aggressive.
Another horse was killed after falling off an embankment in a severely crowded paddock.
When the horses were moved to the stables, another horse died after being fed large amounts of food that he wasn't used to. The horse had shown signs of colic, an extremely painful illness.
When the horses were moved back to the paddocks after this incident, another horse had the skin and muscles of her leg torn away by wire fencing.
Several goats and sheep died from worm infestations and from falling into the sink holes that covered the farm.
Numerous chickens were mauled and killed by unsupervised dogs or trampled by other animals when left unprotected.
How can something like this happen when the unit production manager was warned and the production was monitored by the AHA?! Furthermore, this movie was directed by Peter Jackson, a master at computer-generated imagery (CGI). In a movie that features CGI dragons, ogres, and hobbits, CGI animals would have fit in perfectly. Jackson could have made The Hobbit without using a single animal—and he should have.

Здравствуйте. Спасибо, что поделились своей фантазией)) Так здорово лицезреть то, что живет в мыслях.

after this,i wanna see a movie from the beginning, when sauron first rose to power, and gandalf was younger, and all 5 wizards were around, and saurons death, and all that. make it one 3 hour long movie of action and whatever.

John JJ Hill
Well I think it a good thing to see three movies and all of the appendices come to life. I read the story many years ago as a young man and then had only the cartoon movie to grow up with. To see it finally on the screen was a wish come true. Thanks Peter!

David O'Brien
Went to your film at considerable expense at Imax in Sydney but it was not in HFR. Now its impossible to find it in high frame rate anywhere.

Kelnen Turvarian
Movies were awesome! would like to see more, perhaps the story of Morgoth?

William Rheinford
Yes yes! Pleeeease bring us your vision of the First Age!

William Rheinford
... and sure it will be the last movies you ever make, but what a fitting tribute to Tolkein. A man that has brought us all so much...

I'm thrilled over the Trilogy of The Hobbit. Excellent deciesion between the 3 of you. Followed your work for a long time. Looking forward to the 'Extended Release' of the Films. They do you & your team credit.

I hope to get a reply to my comment. Thank you. When are parts 2 and 3 coming out ( please don't make us wait until Dec 2014 for #3). Dec 2013 for #2? Yes? Is the same actor, who appeared briefly, in the 1st film, will play the Elvenking? Also, who will play the part of Bard? Middle Earth has replaced "The galaxy far, far away," as my #1 fav books/movies series. Great visual spectical; a feast for the eyes. The God given talent of the people and one of God's jewels...New Zealand. Thank you Peter for brining JRR TOLKIEN'S world to life, and in the process showed us the breath taking beauty of New Zealand. Please continue with the story telling of Middle Earth. I have an encyclopedia of Middle Earth and I've read The Silmarillion, then there are the Histories of Middle-Earth. These will all make great films. Great job to the make up people and photographers for making the actors from TLOTR look younger. Great casting, now I know the actor who turned down the part Aragorn; he's to old, Vigo was perfect

I was on the edge of my seat, waiting to see Hobbit 2, I read the book as a teen, was one of my favorites books,

Peter Jackson has made the perfect movie to the book and that is a rare thing.

Katie Castleberry
"The Road goes ever on and on." "Down from the door where it began." That song gets me everytime.

I cannot put into words how amazing you, the cast and the crew did in the 1st installment of the hobbit. I nearly cried when I learned that you were making the film. Mainly because after the Return of the king, it was only speculation and I am sure I was not the only fan who sat and wondered "how in the world are they going to portray Bilbo much younger than when you first saw him in The Fellowship of the ring?" I dissected the mannerism, personality and over all character of Bilbo, both the old and the new and all I can say is.....brilliant! You literally are lead to believe they are the same person! My only complaint is and this is only because I have watched your work from the very beginning, even have the 76th Annual Academy Awards recorded, where you and the team kicked butt and made history, I cannot wait to see the Desolation of Smaug!!!!! Is there going to be a second trailer sometime soon?! Thank you, from one perfectionist as well as Tolkien fan, to another, for such beautifully made and subversive films! Cannot wait for the next two and practically at the edge of my seat in anticipation!

While I enjoyed the hobbit I noticed it didnot have the same quality as the Lord of the rings? Someone told me it was shot on digital which would explain the difference. Will The Hobbit 2&3 also be shot on digital? Also for those who love Tolkien may I suggest a British author who spins a great yarn in the Tolkien style, "Stephen Law head" especially his older works are fantastic with lots of twists and turns.

It's impossible not to compare LOTR with the Hobbit - in a way it's good they are different - in other way you can't help thinking it's no use to even try to compare them. I watched LOTR in my best years, I am no longer in my twenties :)) - but I am really grateful to experience a simillar joy - I had come to believe there won't be a better movie and that LOTR will be the greatest joy I ever experienced watching a movie. Congratulations for everything you do, Peter Jackson, I may be an actress and a passionate songwriter -I may find joy in everything I do in my every day life - but everything you do makes this life a bit more beautiful. Thank you.

you are in amazing man you some how took the story of the hobbit and made it better the the lord of the rings i have allways loved the hobbit but it was never as dense lotr everything you added was brilliant the stuff you added from the apendices filled several plot holes and felt like it needed to be there and the stuff you added was just as good tied the story closer to lotr and just felt plain logical i have allways liked the premise of the hobbit more then lotr it was just slim you however correct

Tristen Stark
ed that in grand fashion as well as putting the movie on par with lotr people complain that the hobbit trilogy is to long and paded they are liars i recently had the pleasure to watch the desolation of smaug and i was astounded the movie was amazing it not a second was wasted or padded in fact my only complant was i wished the movie was longer but considering that it was 2 hours and 45 minutes long thats a petty request also i realized that without the appendice content virtualy all of gandolfs content

Tristen Stark
would be gone and without that there would be some serious plot holes so thinks for being awesome i am counting the days untill there and back again hits theaters december 17 next year

Dude........... dude. You had one job. ONE job. @[106487246055621:274:J.R.R Tolkein] fans were counting on you to get the story right. I understand a little embellishment, I can appreciate the introduction of a few characters, and I loved the focus on the back story (even though you didn't mention the dwarven rings at ALL). But to flat out SLAUGHTER the last half of this chapter makes you deserving of some serious tar and feathering. The little love story between a character and one of your own design - when they should have DESPISED each other - was a worse travesty than separating Sam & Frodo over some breadcrumbs. You did well on Smaug - kudos all around - and I understand the cash you spent on him made you want to give him some air time. But to take such a masterpiece of literature and toss it into the fires of Doom to satisfy your own ego? C'mon, man. "Based on the works of" doesn't give you the poetic license to rewrite the whole thing like some plagiarizing frat boy.
You've got one more shot, pal. Don't screw it up.

Well Mr. Jackson, it's obvious that there will always be critics and haters, but I for one can't wait to see the third part, you have given us our money's worth each movie each being a master piece Ty so much.

Bilal Ahmad KhAn
i need lord of the ring and the hobbit type movies any onw know?

Glenn Wychryst
Now, can you PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, do the ERAGON series?? PLEASE! It is a superb story, over four books and deserves a good chance at a film series, unlike that abysmal attempt back in 2006, where the characters were faux representatives of who they should have been. Only the casting of Eragon and perhaps Ahjihad were close to the book. Even John Malkavich didn't quite pull off Galbatorix. A decent try, but the film was WAY TOO shallow.

Theresa Terry Smathers Hoffmann
It has been our family tradition to see all your tolkien movies....ive read all his books and your movies are the only ones that made the pictures in my head come alive...your work and that of the cast is brilliant and a treasure! I cannot thank you enough for your devotion to artistic detail and authenticity! If you find you have the desire to do another tolkien film please consider the very beginning with the elven story in the silmillian...the elves are so magical. Would love to see their story come to life!

Theresa Terry Smathers Hoffmann
Silmarillian please!!!!!!!!!

It brought tears to my eyes in the theater watching with 3 generations of family, I was turned on to Tolkien in 8th Grade English, The Movie really did the Book proud.

Robert Bush
I wonder if you have read Robert Jordan's "the Wheel of Time" series. The story line in these books would make an awesome series of movies. They are very "Tolkien like" . Awesome job with all four movies sir!!

Roberto D'Ambra
Great job! Cannot wait to see it to the cinema!!!

Susan Baker Farmer
These movies are the book I wish Professor Tolkien had written.
