Facebook and World IPv6 Day
Facebook Engineering
The time has come! World IPv6 Day starts Wednesday, June 8, 00:00 UTC. As we announced at the start of this year, World IPv6 Day is an important step in the future of the Internet: it's the first global "test flight" of IPv6, the next-generation address format of the Internet. It's also important for Facebook, as it will allow us to test our infrastructure more widely with minimal disruption to our service.

World IPv6 Day is a 24-hour test that will enable the industry to gain insights about potential IPv6 issues, find solutions, and accelerate global adoption of IPv6. We are working with our peers to keep the Internet open and make sure all computers and devices stay connected.

IPv6 is vital because the Internet's original addressing system (IPv4) has run out of free space. Since every device on the Internet relies on a unique address to communicate, we must transition to IPv6 — which provides over 4 billion times more addresses than IPv4. IPv6 will ensure everyone (users, ISPs, governments, and companies) have direct and open access to the Internet.

Telecom carriers, ISPs, OS makers, hardware manufacturers, Web companies, and governments around the world are depending on IPv6 to continue growth of the Internet. IPv6 is used extensively in many large networks, but has never been enabled at a global scale.

Why It Matters to Facebook

World IPv6 Day will allow us to better understand how our infrastructure and code perform under IPv6 while minimizing impact on our users. Since January, we’ve conducted several studies and tests of our own and have gained even greater confidence that our site is ready for IPv6. We anticipate that 99.97% of users will not be affected at all. The small number of users who may be affected may find that pages are slow to load and we are working to minimize the impact.

Of course, we will be prepared to address any issues as they come up. Our Help Center has instructions and more information for users who may be affected.

We are encouraged by the overwhelming response of the hundreds of major organizations who have signed up to participate on World IPv6 Day.

Check back here June 9 to see how the test went.

Donn is a network engineer at Facebook who wants you all to know that there are more IPv6 addresses than grains of sand on the Earth's beaches.

Good luck!!

How about making the top menu bar "follow" you when you scroll down? It's annoying to constantly have to scroll back up to see if you have any notifications.
Mick O'Doherty
does this mean i can start adding friends again??..
Igor Oliveira
Facebook, keep us updated. Cheers!
David Tkachuk
So, if all IPv4 is taken? Internet blows up?
Dodong Cubico
good luck
Bill Gorman
Yeh, cross your fingers! Like the "Smart Phone" it will be full of bugs to work out, my droid still does not quallify for "Smart"! Facebook decided to let other people add me to their groups without asking me first. Facebbok feedback and quality control is practically non existant.
Rafa Rodríguez
Chuck Norris uses IPV6 since 2000 without any problems...
Anas A.A
how to join the test-flight??
Xavier Alexander
ipv4 feels like 127.0.0.1 for some of us...
Jay Ashworth
Indeed: are all the various CDNs and subsidiary servers involved in building the average FB page participating?
Adam Miller
Teresa Doucette Madore; download "Better FaceBook" from the page: "Better FaceBook", it is a FB enhancement which has that feature and many others you will be surprised to find... (c-:

How about dislike button:)
James Flamish
What happened to ipv5? I guess it was a failure since the Internet went from ipv4 to ipv6.
Claudio Coppola
finally ipv6!
Bill Gorman
Hey fans, IPV6 allows for more IP addresses it really has nothiong to do with how facebook looks. It only gives them more room for more computers on the internet by diviing up IP addresses into a multiple of adresses
Callum Kerr
James, IPV6 is virtually future proof. It allows for something like 256 devices per square foot on the planet surface, including ocean.

:)

Keep up

Just as soon as ISPs are on board we'll be set. Until then, well, I have a IPv4 address already.

Heather Ville - World IPv6 day has been known for a while, and it's not just Facebook, most every big company on the Internet is involved. Google, Facebook, Yahoo... It's a day to test their IPv6 readiness as we need to move over to it. There is more on the day here: http://www.worldipv6day.org/
Serge Stepanov
God, why do people complain about Facebook bugs in these posts. These are NOT a way to report bugs, it's for those who want to know about the inner tech working of Facebook.
Robert R. Rader
Waiting, let's get it done.

Good luck, guys! The future is forever!

Thnx 4 infm us Fb engg.
Ipv6 is awsm vrsion..

I am curious on how the actual test would be carried out. Since the majority of users use IPv4 how would Facebook or any other website monitor IPv6 data traffic on a commercially large scale? I know I am missing out on something obvious but I just can't wrap my head around it.
Surya Ningsih Jutek'x
eror database.
Steven Collins
adam miller----where is this Better FaceBook? search does not find it.
Carl Holzhauer
Avirip... Most os's prefer ipv6 to ipv4, so if you already have an ipv6 address, you'll connect over that instead
Avirup Sen
Carl I know that, but there are very few IPv6 distributions as compared to IPv4. Second of all, some machines with both versions can often find it difficult to select which IP to use, a state known as "IPv6 brokenness". I know, Facebook would switch on their infrastructure in such a way that anyone with IPv6 would connect to the IPv6 version of the website. I am just saying that the number of IPv6 addresses are so small on a global scale, there would not be enough sample data to analyze the network.
Whuex 'e Nonno
wellcome Ipvsix
anyone can be connected and connect to it anywhere with fb.
& the privacy is over!!!! ;) :)
Joly MacFie
It certainly is an irony that World IPv6 Day help pages for end-users mainly consist of instructions to disable it - there should also be instructions on demanding that their ISPs implement it!
Ade Omooba
Let see how it goes
Amol Navpute
It sounds gud.....let's see :-)
சுதா ராணி வேலுச்சாமி
I had just studied abt d ipv6 address nd protocol nd it seems gud 4 me to find its real time application in fb...
Avirup Sen
Sudha, IPv6 is not implemented to that scale in India. In all probability, your ISP has given you an IPv4 address, so this day would not effect you in any way!
Glen Turpin
Also, Heather Ville, work began on IPv6 in 1995. This isn't new -- preparations have been underway for a long, long time. http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc1883

This was bound to happen as the no. of IP address taken in recent times was humongous...The transition is the our only way to move ahead and be connected to the world..Good luck Facebook...

ipv6 links are up here :) aim fin
Aaron Ogle
If your ISP hasnt given you an IPv6 address, and you'd like to check it out. Look into IPv6 tunnels. Like teredo.

An issue is the lack of security right off. Most home routers are completely oblivious to the new protocol. So anything and everything will pass through. Leaving you very exposed.

If you're technical its not difficult to setup a firewall. I have an old machine running Ubuntu with iptables. Easy enough for someone that is experienced in networking.

So obviously we are a ways off from being used in mass by the end user. But, its the future. Be curious. Learn something new!
Ryan C Johnson
Keep innovating Facebook!
Raux de Rougé
about time and we are ready
Avirup Sen
Aaron, how are the IPv6 tunnels in terms of performance?
Mohamad Lezeik
Great!!..... but I didn't buy the "grains of sand on earth" thing, i mean that's just tooooooooooooooooooo much
Mi Na
Hiiii ..... I have a question: My brother's account has been locked!!!! what can we do to unlock it??? (sorry for asking here, I couldn't find any otherwhere for asking.) with spesiaL Thanks.
Luiz Zenni
OK...good news..the new protocol's welcome....
Philip Matuskiewicz
Great news! Too bad most of my providers haven't moved to IPv6 yet, maybe this will prompt them to move faster!
Aaron Ogle
@Avirup Sen, Actually on pages like google. It seemed to be a little faster. This could be just because the traffic isn't as heavy
Avirup Sen
Mohamad , IPv6 uses 128 bit addresses so the number of addresses would be 2^128= (3.4 *10^38) addresses. That is actually more than grains of sand on earth :P
Avirup Sen
Aaron, I would like performance tests when it becomes more saturated. How much encryption does the firewall provide anyone? Can it prevent exploits or social engineering tools?
Justin Morris
SkyNet???
Jason Buster
What aspects of the site will be IPv6 enabled? Can I expect www.facebook.com to have a AAAA record? Will the site work 100% on IPv6? Has the CDN been updated to support IPv6? Are you going to remove the AAAA records after the test?
Avirup Sen
Good point about the AAAA record. I doubt if the pages would load faster in IPv6 but then this test is required on site infrastructure even with initial problems. However, the records provide a case of identification and data privacy which is another question altogether.

I'd like to have more information regarding the changes from IP V4 to IPV6

..wow..!!
IPv6 has over 4 billion times more addresses than IPv4..!!!
..its a revolution in addressing..!!

ALL WEEK I have had issues on FB and I imagine it was them preparing for this. While I understand why they are doing it, it is VERY annoying.

looking forward

'Bout time to get that change. But, a quest remains: page-at-once! Facebook? Anyone? No elements, whole page? Not yet? Come on! IPv4 to v6 done, now, time for page-at-once!
Internet Protocol address version 4 to version 6 (changing IPs from 4 nummbers defined from 0/255 - 128 b / 16 B address to 6 nummber address, again, 128 bit, ain't a revolution, from one point of view. In enginearing it is. Most equipment is IPv4, and browsers are IPv6 EMULATED support. Thats why U get troubles with apps and everything. But, I think that playing on internet troubles and pains are irrelevant. U should realy focus about finaly trying to force profit-based companies to finaly start to "earn" that profit. This is a small, but major step for humanity, as we see it today. Back on enginearing. New DNS, resolvers, I hope, no hardware changes, but, uploading new firmwares and... lot of work. Mostly, end-user will commonly be given IPv4, while, globaly, the first two nummbers from IPv4 will just address ISP and domains, while ISPs will translate IPv6 to IPv4 for end users. Most of the end user equipment stays unchanged, and server holders has some pain in the neck, forcing them to ACTUALLY WORK AT SOMETHING. Conclusion: nice step fw x))
Madhanraj Meignanam
Good move..!
Buzz Hill
... its a friendly thing to do. Something we have come to expect from Facebook.
Elizabeth Shiroheishi
Just don't become like myspace. Lagged and bogged with spam and ads. The ability to add subsections with titles ourselves would be nice. Just saying. Off topic i know!
Sandro Biderman
Off topic. Yes. Good remark. Also. We miss profile "tabs" where users could add their own subsections, not just fb predefined. I miss my "links" and "notes" tabs... at least, second look at "new profile" vXXZ looks better than it's first. Maybe (I pray 4it) we get the tabs back x)) at least a couple of slots ;))
Rafa Rodríguez
I recommend you use Firefox , Install Greasemonkey addon and install "Facebook Fixer" script, it has great benefits
Badresh Kumar Singh
"IPv6"..!! Owing to its immense addressing capacity.. its not just a system.. its a REVOLUTION indeed..!!
James Flamish
If u want more info about ipv4 and ipv6 it's simple just google it. It even shows u how ipv5 didn't work in 1979.

i'm one of o.o3%. fb iz really slow

It'll be another 100 years before IPv6 arrives in South Africa ... sigh!

How many locations does Facebook expect to peer to with IPv6?

It appears that most US-based IPv6 servers resolve to AAAA records in Ireland (using Google and Verizon DNS servers; resolving to a 2a03 prefix):

2a03:2880:2110:3f01:face:b00c::
2a03:2880:10:1f02:face:b00c:0:25
2a03:2880:10:8f01:face:b00c:0:25

Also, the US address is awfully slow (2620:0:1cfe:face:b00c::3). Is there a capacity problem on this address? What should we expect as IPv6 day approaches?
