No Taxpayer Monies for ACORN!
I applaud the U.S. Senate for its overwhelmingly bi-partisan 83-7 vote last night to prohibit the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) from receiving any taxpayer funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Frankly, in my mind, ACORN should be prohibited from receiving any taxpayers funds at all, across the board.
This move comes on the heels of the U.S. Census Bureau’s announcement last week that it was terminating its plans to have ACORN assist the Federal government with the 2010 Census.
These moves were spurred by the revelation that several ACORN employees in Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Maryland, and New York City were videotaped advising a couple, who claimed to be interested in establishing a brothel, how to obtain a home mortgage and avoid income taxes generated by illegal activities. This unsavory incident is only the latest in a series of activities in which ACORN has been engaged. For example, during the 2008 presidential election, serious allegations about fraudulently registering voters were lodged against ACORN employees.
I hope that the U.S. House of Representatives will accept the Senate proposal, and broaden it such that ACORN does not receive any taxpayer funds whatsoever. The American people are rightfully outraged by ACORN’s behavior and the U.S. Congress should send a clear and unequivocal signal that it will not tolerate such behavior by any organization using taxpayer monies.
Sincerely,
Vern Buchanan
Member of Congress
