Capito Capitol Update
October 20 · Public
We have reached a deal!
Senator Capito spent this week in Washington working to help bring an end to the partial government shutdown. Friday afternoon President Trump announced that the deal had, at last, been reached, bringing an end to the longest partial government shutdown in American history. “You are fantastic people, you are incredible patriots,” President Trump said, praising the perseverance of furloughed federal workers in the opening lines of his remarks
President Trump went on, outlining his hopes for a continued deal to keep government open past February 15th. "I really feel that working with Democrats and Republicans we can make a truly great and secure deal happen for everyone," said the President. “Walls should not be controversial.”
Senator Capito, along with Senate colleagues immediately voted to reopen the government. “I am pleased the president has reached a deal to end the partial government shutdown so our federal employees in West Virginia and across the country can get back to work. I am grateful to them and their families for all they do every day on behalf of our nation," said Senator Capito of the deal.
While it sounds like a steep mountain, I embrace this.
"I embrace the ability to play a role to find a reasonable solution,” Senator Capito said on the Senate floor Friday afternoon, of her part in the working toward improved border security and keeping the federal government open.
Shortly following the passage of the bill Senator Capito was selected to serve on the conference committee to negotiate the Homeland Security Appropriations package. "I look forward to engaging in discussions with my colleagues and working in a meaningful way to strengthen border security so we can provide certainty, safety, and security for all Americans," said Senator Capito.
"As chairman of the Homeland Security Appropriations subcommittee, I have worked extensively over the past year with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Border Patrol, Democrats, and Republicans alike," she continued. "I also crafted a bipartisan bill, which passed in June, that provided resources to meet our border security challenges, including a wall system." Senator Capito concluded, expressing her hopes for a strengthened border, “so we can provide certainty, safety, and security for all Americans”.
