Action Needed on Common Sense Gun Safety Measures
ENOUGH.
ENOUGH.
More of our precious children are dead. America has witnessed 18 school shootings since January. No other country in the world experiences this kind of senseless violence. This must stop.
Once again, the silence is deafening. Once again, thoughts and prayers are not enough. We must take action. We must stand up to the money and power of the gun lobby that has bought politicians’ silence and inaction.
In October, after the Las Vegas shootings, I called for a common sense conversation that leads to action. Nothing has happened.
Today, I once again vow that, as Governor, I will immediately bring together parents, law enforcement, domestic violence advocates, suicide prevention experts, hunters, gun enthusiasts, and school officials in order to develop and submit a package of gun safety measures. That package must address assault weapons.
It is time for all of us stand up to the gun lobby. Stop taking their money and stop being afraid to take action because they will spend their money against anyone who calls for common sense safety. Our children and all Mainers deserve no less.
Again, I call on my colleagues running in the gubernatorial race to pledge the same.
