【📝Infographic| Regarding the Proposed Amendments to the Fugitive Offenders Ordinance👨⚖️】
Recent amendments by the Security Bureau suggested that the Ordinance include Mainland China in Hong Kong’s extradition arrangements. This would mean that Hong Kong citizens who are deemed suspects may be send to the Mainland to await trial - this process will only require consent from the Chief Executive and the Court. Given the terms of the amendments, activists are placed in a very precarious position, whereby they will become the most vulnerable to be accused of another crime as an excuse, and be extradited to Mainland China. This does not only affect local Hong Kong citizens, but also any individual who decides to travel to or pass by Hong Kong to reach another destination. Should they have had trouble with the authorities in Mainland China, for example, when doing journalistic reports, they would be implicated as well.
This move will undoubtedly degrade the Rule of Law of Hong Kong and our judicial system's independence. As this step would affect both local and foreign citizens, it is imperative for authorities and communities around the world and pay attention to the upcoming developments of these amendments.
