President Obama releases statement on the House reauthorizing the Violence Against Women Act:
"I was pleased to see the House of Representatives come together and vote to reauthorize and strengthen the Violence Against Women Act. Over more than two decades, this law has saved countless lives and transformed the way we treat victims of abuse. Today's vote will go even further by continuing to reduce domestic violence, improving how we treat victims of rape, and extending protections to Native American women and members of the LGBT community. The bill also reauthorizes the Trafficking Victims Protection Act, providing critical support for both international and domestic victims of trafficking and helping ensure traffickers are brought to justice. I want to thank leaders from both parties - especially Leader Pelosi, Congresswoman Gwen Moore and Senator Leahy - for everything they've done to make this happen. Renewing this bill is an important step towards making sure no one in America is forced to live in fear, and I look forward to signing it into law as soon as it hits my desk."
Don't be fooled by the Democrat lies that the "draconian cuts" of the sequester will result in closed parks, police layoffs, and empty store shelves. That's a lie.
Don't be fooled by Republican lies that the sequester will reduce our national debt and restore our economy. That's a lie.
Both parties... are spending this country into collapse, and they know it.
Here's the truth. If the $85 billion in automatic cuts actually takes effect as predicted for FY 2013, federal spending will still be more than in FY 2012. It authorizes the President to increase the debt ceiling by another half-trillion dollars. And, keep in mind that the $85 billion in cuts is only 10% of the amount spent in Obama's first stimulus package.
If you want to understand why we are facing an economic crisis, take a look at the federal spending over the last 13 years:
2013 United States federal budget - $3.8 trillion (Obama)
2012 United States federal budget - $3.7 trillion (Obama)
2011 United States federal budget - $3.8 trillion (Obama)
2010 United States federal budget - $3.6 trillion (Obama)
2009 United States federal budget - $3.1 trillion (Bush)
2008 United States federal budget - $2.9 trillion (Bush)
2007 United States federal budget - $2.8 trillion (Bush)
2006 United States federal budget - $2.7 trillion (Bush)
2005 United States federal budget - $2.4 trillion (Bush)
2004 United States federal budget - $2.3 trillion (Bush)
2003 United States federal budget - $2.2 trillion (Bush)
2002 United States federal budget - $2.0 trillion (Bush)
2001 United States federal budget - $1.9 trillion (Clinton)
Here's the truth: We could cut the budget by 50% across the board right now, and still only be back to 2002 spending levels. Did we have parks in 2002? Did we have police in 2002? Did we have food in 2002? Oh, and our national debt in 2002 was $6 trillion dollars. Today, it's over $16 trillion.
Don't be fooled by the lies. Bring on the sequester cuts. I only wish they were 25 times bigger.
