About NAGVA, Inc.
The North American Gay Volleyball Association (NAGVA, Inc., “NAGVA”) is a not for profit 501(c)7 organization, committed to promoting and developing the sport of volleyball in the GLBT communities of the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. NAGVA, Inc. is incorporated in the state of Texas.
NAGVA serves as the administrative and governing body for sanctioned indoor tournaments. There are currently four divisions (skill levels/player ratings) ranging from complete beginners to former collegiate level players.
Tournament and leagues organizers from several cities met in 1981, seeking to standardize rules of play pool resources. The resulting organization has grown to include annual tournaments in over 30 cities and has an ever growing membership.
Cities from across North America host tournaments - from the Pacific Northwest, from Maui to Toronto; even more excitingly, participating teams come from an even wider array of cities across North America. Leagues also exist in cities that do not currently host a tournament – visit our website’s Leagues page for details.
NAGVA’s playing season begins in early June and culminates with the Association’s Championships tournament held annually over Memorial Day weekend. Cities compete in a bidding process to host the event.
We are a member-driven and volunteer based organization. Officers to the board are elected each year during Championships at the Annual Meeting. In alternating years, 4 Executive and 4 Members at-Large are elected to serve 2 year terms. Additionally, each season the President nominates individuals to serve a term of one year as Appointed Officers. By approval of the voting board members, these officers manage NAGVA's administrative departments.
NAGVA maintains a matchmaker service on its website for registered members, allowing players in search of teams, and vice versa, to post ads and make connections. Further, we also facilitate a Facebook group called NAGVA Network to further assist in connecting players and teams who are searching to match for upcoming tournaments.
