Santa Teresa Park Wildflowers and Views, 3/24/21 by Ronald Horii
Bernal Hill in Santa Teresa Park has one of the best wildflower displays in the County Parks. It's because it's covered with serpentine rocks and soil, which inhibit the growth of non-native weeds that compete with native wildflowers. Many natives have evolved to tolerate serpentine soil, so they can do well in it. I hiked up the Joice and Bernal Hill Trails to see how the wildflowers are doing. Some wildflowers are out, particularly the poppies, but others are late this year compared to other years at this time, probably due to the lack of rain. Hopefully, they will start to emerge in the coming weeks, but high temperatures are predicted, with little rain in sight. This might be result in a short and light wildflower year. The pictures below show what it looked like on 3/24/21. This is what it looked like 11 years ago on 3/26/10: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.107491579274373.11159.100000405933924&type=1&l=f3b0ee39f7
