IBM Almaden Research Center Views, 3/7/02, 4/17/02 by Ronald Horii
The purpose of this album is to show the open space and views around IBM's Almaden Research Center in the Santa Teresa Hills. I worked for IBM from 1977 through 2002 in San Jose at its disk drive division's huge campus on Cottle Road. Occasionally, I would visit the Almaden Research Center (ARC) high up on the Santa Teresa Hills for meetings or conferences. Sometimes I would go to visit the library or just have lunch in the cafeteria. The lab buildings occupy a tiny portion of the 700 acres that IBM owns around it. Most of the land is open undeveloped hillside. It adjoins 1673-acre Santa Teresa County Park. One of the park's most popular trails, which has some of the best spring wildflower viewing in the County Parks, is the Stile Ranch Trail, which actually runs through an easement on IBM property. The lab opened in 1986. Its buildings are situated just below the top of Bernal Hill and are surrounded by a berm, to make them less visible from the valley below. These pictures are from some of my last visits to the lab in 2002. After that, IBM sold the disk drive division to Hitachi, so I became an Hitachi employee. It would have been harder to visit ARC, so I haven't been there since then. These pictures show the views from the lab's property, taken on 3/7/02 and 4/17/02. While the property is not accessible to the public without permission, the pictures show terrain that is visible from public lands and in satellite photos. The pictures were taken with my first good digital camera, a 1MP Fuji Finepix 1400 with 3X zoom. I'm writing this in 2020, so some of my comments reflect what's happening now.
ARC is one of the premier private research labs in the world. See the links below for more about the research and discoveries made there.
