Calero Hike, Figueroa to Oak Cove Trail, 10/22/20 by Ronald Horii
On 10/22/20, I went for a hike in Calero County Park on the Figueroa, Pena, Los Cerritos, and Oak Cove Trails. Unfortunately, my usual hiking camera, a Panasonic ZS60 travelzoom, was in the shop, so I had to use my smartphone, a Moto E4, to take pictures. The camera app in the phone drains the battery fast, so I ran out of power mid-way through the hike. My phone shut down at the worst time, right before the part of the hike with the best views. I also saw a hawk, a baby rattlesnake, and a baby gopher snake, but couldn't take pictures of them. Just my luck. When I go biking, I carry an external battery with me. Halfway through my recent long Bay Trail bike rides, where I've used my phone to take pictures, I've had to plug my phone into it to keep it powered up. I forgot to bring it on this hike. Here are the pictures I did get. As you can see, there was hardly anyone on the trail. There was one equestrian, a couple of bikes, and a couple hikers on the whole trip. When I got back to the parking lot, more bikers were preparing to head out. This part of the park is a lot less busy than the Rancho San Vicente end. It's also more popular with equestrians.
