Bay Trail: San Mateo to SFO, 8/15/15 by Ronald Horii
On a hot day on 8/15/15, I headed to the Bay to cool off. I went on a bike ride, starting at Seal Point Park in San Mateo and took the Bay Trail to Coyote Point Recreation Area. I continued on the Bay Trail all the way to San Francisco International Airport, where it ends at the airport boundary in Millbrae. I made some side trips. The total distance was 21 miles. I basically followed the route of my old Bay Trail tour from 1999: http://baytrail.abag.ca.gov/vtour/map2/access/Btsm2mb/Btsm2mb.htm

This route is almost completely flat, except for a few bridges along the trail and low hills at Coyote Point. While it was windless until about 2:00 in the afternoon on the day I went, it can get very windy on this route. It's best to start from the south and head north early in the day. The winds will be at your back on the return trip. One time, my bike's derailleur broke on this route, so I couldn't pedal. Fortunately I was heading south, so I opened up my windbreaker and used it as a sail to push me back to my car.
