Almaden Air Force Station, Mt. Umunhum 9/24/11 by Ronald Horii
I was invited by friends to accompany a group of Air Force veterans to a reunion ceremony on top of Mt. Umhunhum, the site of Almaden Air Force Station. The mountain's top is now owned by the Mid-Peninsula Regional Open Space District and is being prepared for public access. When I visited in 2011, the buildings, except for the main radar tower, were in the process of being torn down. For many of the buildings, the walls were gone, and only the framework and foundations remained. I published pictures of the incredible views from Mt. Umunhum (http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.271059809584215.65287.100000405933924&type=1&l=db4cce7c73), but not pictures of the structures, for fear of encouraging vandals and metal thieves. Now that everything but the concrete tower is gone, there's nothing left to steal. Here are pictures showing what was left of the Air Force Station in 2011. Since it's been a few years since I was there, I don't remember what all the buildings were for. I'm sure there are other people who do remember and can identify them or have stories about them. The Air Force Station was operational from 1958 to 1980.

If one digs, the base map is or was findable.
A little base so close to other towns and perched up there is quirky and interesting.

Veterans who lived up there said it was their favorite air force station.
