Artsy Fartsy Pictures by Ronald Horii
This is in response to a challenge by Ellen Levy Finch to post an "artsy picture" each day for 5 days and to challenge someone to do the same. What is "artsy fartsy?" That's up to me to decide. I interpret it to mean using artistic techniques in photography, rather than just straightforward documentary approaches. These aren't necessarily "art," which is hard to define and in the eye of the beholder, but they are techniques that can be used to create art. One definition of art is that it is a creation that reflects the emotions, moods, and ideas of the artist. It is the artist's interpretation of the world and attempt to convey those feelings to others. Or it could be just to make something to attract attention and make money. Whatever. For photography, it requires something different than a conventional snapshot. It can even be recognizing objects or patterns that when isolated represent art, like Edward Weston's pictures. I consider one a day a minimum.

I think that's 5 days. Now to spread the challenge around. The rules are post 1 "artsy fartsy" picture a day for 5 days. You decide what that means. You can post more if you want. Start when you're ready. It doesn't necessarily have to be an artistic photo. It can be a scan or a picture of a piece of physical art. It's preferred, but it doesn't have to be yours. It can be a video. I'll even expand it to other art forms, like music or poetry. Challenge 1 person a day to do the same, or however many you want. Now I challenge my son Chris Horii. He has graphic arts degree from UCLA. (Guess who paid for it.) Roger Charles Delight has accepted the challenge before I gave it. Go for it. Keishu Asada has been posting artistic photos. Keep it up. His mom, Gwendolyn Gallagher has a nice garden in Japan with opportunities for artistic inspiration, like Monet's. Cissy Brazil has been posting lots of gorgeous pictures of her paintings and painted rocks. It would be great to see more, but it can be pictures of the outdoors. If you choose to accept the challenge, consider it a means of expressing your creativity. Most of all, have fun.

Looks like Fernando Elias is now challenged, as well.

Anyone can volunteer to take on the Artsy Fartsy Challenge and challenge others. It may help get your creative juices flowing.

I made this Facebook album and put them in there so they'd all be in one place. That's probably the best way to do it. Start a Facebook Album. Put your first picture in it, then keep adding to it. You can put comments on each picture.

Ok, let me think about it. My painted rocks with a few of my canvases might be what I do. Thankfully I saved my rock photos as they are no longer with me. . They are in someone's yard

Ron, ok I created a new album and put in the photos I wanted. How do sort of meld them together and show them as you did above? I have to ask questions!

Forget the "meld". How do I showcase them like yours above?

When we go to your album, they should be displayed like this--if you're looking at your own album, probably not displayed the same way, beause you can edit/etc.

I see okay. Thanks. Now, do post them for the Challenge? Sorry for all the questions. Never done this before.

Generally what people do is add one photo a day to the album and click Post and it goes into their timeline for their friends to see, and for the description mention that it's Day (whatever) of the photo challenge. It's all pretty loose and informal. Everyone seems to have slightly different "rules" and everyone does them differently. For mine, I added a photo a day to the album and when I added to the album, there's a Post button. And each day in the photos description I also challenged one more person. Ron waited until the end to challenge some people. You could challenge more people, but the way I first heard it was to challenge a person a day along with posting your photo.

When you post pictures to an album, you have a Privacy selection: Public, Friends, Only Me, Custom, Family. When I'm in the middle of creating an album, I select "Only Me," so I can edit it without everyone being informed of the intermediate edits. Then when I'm ready to publish, I'll select one of the other options, depending on how personal it is. I usually select Public, unless they are personal pictures.
