Alviso Crowds, Construction, and Clouds, 10/21/23 by Ronald Horii
On 10/21/23, I rode my bike to Alviso Marina County Park. I was surprised to see how busy it was. Day on the Bay, which attracts thousands of visitors, was the week before. I wondered if people were introduced to Alviso by the event, and it attracted them enough that they came back, bringing their friends and families. There were lots of families taking pictures. The parking lots were full or nearly full. Luckily, I parked several blocks away, where there was plenty of parking. After posting some of these pictures in real-time on Facebook, I found out these crowds have been building for weeks, probably due to pictures posted on social media that went viral. I found out what the crowds were here for. Unfortunately, they were breaking the rules and potentially damaging the environment in pursuit of taking some unique pictures. I left the crowd and biked down the Alviso Slough Trail to the confluence of Coyote Creek and the Alviso Slough. The wildlife vastly outnumbered the people out there. There were nice clouds out, which made the skies more interesting. When I came back, I saw that the crowds were larger, but they were no longer where they weren't supposed to be, and I found out why. It's archived here: https://web.archive.org/web/20110518210250/http://www.abag.ca.gov/bayarea/baytrail/vtour/map3/access/BTAlviso/Btalviso1.htm. Here's information about Alviso Marina County Park: https://www.sccgov.org/sites/parks/parkfinder/Pages/AlvisoMarina.aspx. The County Park covers 20.6 acres. It's a gateway to the Alviso part of the huge Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge, which covers 30,000 acres and has many miles of trails: https://www.fws.gov/refuge/don_edwards_san_francisco_bay/. Some trails are closed because of construction on the levee for flood protection. Last year, I explored the trails that were open: https://tinyurl.com/397w4sbb
