NAQCPA's Pioneer Day, Almaden Quicksilver Mining Museum, 10/14/23 by Ronald Horii
On 10/14/23, the New Almaden Quicksilver County Park Association (NAQCPA) held their Pioneer Day celebration at the Casa Grande in Almaden Quicksilver County Park. It has been an annual event for NAQCPA since 1983. This was the 41st year since Pioneer Day started, but it was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 because of the pandemic, so this was the 39th time it has been held. It has been at different locations over the years and has had different themes. The original purpose of Pioneer Day was to be a get-together to share stories with former New Almaden miners and people who remembered the mines. Over the years, it has also been used as a dedication for projects in the park. Last year was a memorial to NAQCPA members who have passed away, like co-founder and President Kitty Monahan. This year, like last year, it was held at the Casa Grande, which had been closed for nearly a year due to problems with its facilities. It reopened just a week prior.
