FOSTP Cleanup of Santa Teresa Spring, 10/6/23 by Ronald Horii
On 10/6/23, the Friends of Santa Teresa Park (FOSTP) had a First Friday Work Day at the Bernal-Gulnac-Joice Ranch in Santa Teresa County Park. FOSTP members there were Mike Boulland, Ron Horii, Youngmee Kim, and Joan Murphy. Also there were 5 volunteers. They included Lee, who's been at past work days. Today, we took on the biggest challenge of the year: cleaning up Santa Teresa Spring. This year's heavy rains caused mud flows around the spring, and promoted the growth of weeds and invasive vines. We couldn't clean it up earlier in the year because water and mud kept flowing. It wasn't until summer that it dried up enough to clean it up. We had other priorities the last couple of months, so we didn't get to it. Today, we were able to work on it, and we had a good-size work crew. Below are pictures of the work day, with earlier pictures for comparison. Santa Teresa Spring is the most historically significant site in Santa Teresa County Park, so it's important to keep it clean and presentable to the public. Here's the interpretive sign at the spring that tells the Legend of Santa Teresa: https://www.hmdb.org/m.asp?m=219577. There's another sign lower down by the pond that tells how the Bernal Family used the water from the spring: https://www.hmdb.org/m.asp?m=219564. The last time we cleaned up the spring was on 9/2/22: "FOSTP and Volunteer Clean Up Day at the Bernal Ranch, 9/2/22": https://tinyurl.com/ybne6w4b. Prior to that, we had this work day on 6/4/21: "FOSTP Santa Teresa Spring Cleanup, 6/4/21": https://tinyurl.com/m7jhc7t8, and 7/2/21: "Spring Cleaning, Santa Teresa Spring, 7/2/21": https://tinyurl.com/5e776t34.
