Rancho Canada Del Oro, Mayfair Ranch 1/18/14 by Ronald Horii
On a clear, unusually (though not for this year) warm and dry day in January, I went for a hike on the Mayfair Ranch Trail loop at Rancho Canada del Oro Open Space Preserve, south of San Jose. I've been on this trail many times. It's a loop of less than 5 miles, returning through adjoining Calero County Park. There was a fire in the hills last year that charred about 40 acres. The remnants of the fire could still be seen. Normally, the fire-burned areas would be a lush green by now, with all the dead grass burned away. However, the lack of rain left the hills brown and barren. There was actually not much green and very little water flowing. Canada del Oro has a variety of terrains which is typical of much of California's inland foothills. What's happening here is happening all over California in this drought period, which includes the dryest year in California's recorded history. This is what Canada Del Oro should look like in a normal year: http://www.stpfriends.org/CanadaDelOro-031410/MayfairHike.html — at Rancho Cañada del Oro Open Space Preserve.
