Hellyer County Park BioBlitz, 8/27/23 by Ronald Horii
There was a BioBlitz in Hellyer County Park on Sunday, 8/27/23 (https://www.facebook.com/events/687947206481288/). The aim of a BioBlitz is to observe and record as many living things as possible within a particular area and time period. The observations are recorded using the iNaturalist app or website. The event was sponsored by Keep Coyote Creek Beautiful: https://www.keepcoyotecreekbeautiful.org/, https://www.facebook.com/CoyoteCreekSJ/. It was organized by biologist Merav Vonshak, who has been holding BioBlitzes in other parts of the county. Merav created this website for BioBlitzes: https://www.bioblitz.club/ and this Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/bioblitz.club. Here are the results of the BioBlitz: https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/hellyer-park-summer-2023-bioblitz-event. I went to scout the park and creek last week and compared the water levels to earlier in the year, when the creek was flooded:

During the last BioBlitz that I went to in Hellyer, the trail was flooded, restricting how far the BioBlitz could go down the trail: "Hellyer BioBlitz, 2/12/23": https://tinyurl.com/mryjb3zs. There was another Hellyer BioBlitz on 5/13/23 (which I missed), but the trail was still flooded then. It restricted where the BioBlitz could go, but there was still plenty to see. It took until late June to drain the reservoir. After that, flows in Coyote Creek dropped dramatically, and the trail opened up. See: "Coyote Creek Trail Flooding, Then and Now, 6/25-27/23": https://tinyurl.com/mr2pnhu4. Now there are no restrictions on how far the BioBlitz can go down the trail, time-permitting.
