LAYERS reveals a particular detail found all over New York: in the subway, on the windowframes, on the walls and railings... Paint is the omnipresent source of color, direction, and protection from the elements. But over time it becomes more than this, because here in New York, one does not remove the previous layer before apllying a fresh coat. Over time layer upon layer creates pattern, texture, dimension, joints, a structural element unto itself.
LAYERS attempts to use this decorative deformation to create a new material usage.
Layers of paint become a cushion for a chair, a cover for an iPad, a vase for flowers. This material can be applied to any desired thickness, it degrades, and then, through this game of layering, returns to its former sheen, yet maintaining the textures of its past. — paikassa Brentwood, Amerikan yhdysvallat.
