Coyote Creek, Embedded Way BioBlitz, 6/11/23 by Ronald Horii
On 6/11/23, there was a BioBlitz on the Coyote Creek Trail. This was the description of the event, by Keep Coyote Creek Beautiful (KCCB): "Located in the southern part of San Jose, we will explore Coyote Creek Trail starting at Embedded Way and expanding north to Hellyer Park and south to Silver Creek Valley Road. Join Keep Coyote Creek Beautiful and BioBlitz.club in cataloging and documenting all of the living things that reside there. We will have experts in various fields to help guide participants through all the cool plants and wildlife.
Since we visit this park quarterly, come out again if you've already visited and see the difference a few months can make in what you see.
The best part? All you need to participate is a smart phone with the iNaturalist app!
So bring your family and prepare for an in-depth tour of this great park." What's a BioBlitz? This explains it: https://www.inaturalist.org/pages/bioblitz+guide. The participants become community scientists and record observations of living things on their smartphones, using the iNaturalist app. They can also use dedicated cameras and upload pictures to the iNaturalist website. The data collected is actually used by scientists and students to study which organisms are found in an area. This is an educational experience and provides useful data for science, so students can earn service credit for it. There have been several BioBlitzes on different parts of the Coyote Creek Trail. Here are my pictures of past BioBlitzes: http://www.rhorii.com/#Bioblitz. Below are pictures from today's BioBlitz. BioBlitzes use the iNaturalist app or website to document the observations: https://www.inaturalist.org/.
