Rancho Canada del Oro Open Space Preserve Wildflower Walk 6/10/23 by Ronald Horii
On 6/10/23, there was a wildflower hike at the Santa Clara Valley Open Space Authority's Rancho Canada del Oro Open Space Preserve. The last part of the hike went through Calero County Park. The hike was led by OSA docent Paul Billig, with help from docents Kathy, Vicki, and me. The route for the 4.5-mile hike followed the Mayfair Ranch and Longwall Canyon Trails at the Casa Loma entrance to the preserve. There have been monthly wildflower hikes this year. I went to 2 of them. This was in February, when we saw early season wildflowers: "Rancho Canada del Oro Wildflower Hike, 2/11/23": https://tinyurl.com/y9ymbevs. This was the March hike, when there were more mid-season wildflowers out: https://tinyurl.com/2uxexz62. I missed the April and May hikes, when there were lots of mid-season wildflowers and some late-season flowers blooming. It's now late in the wildflower season, so the early-season flowers have gone to seed, the mid-season flowers are on their way out, and the late-season flowers are in the middle of their bloom. This is what we saw. There has been a near-record amount of rain this season, so there has been a big boost to vegetation growth, both native and non-native. There's still moisture in the ground. Creeks are still running. Flowers that might have dried up by now are still blooming. Here are more of my pictures of Rancho Canada del Oro Open Space Preserve: http://www.rhorii.com/#RCDO. Here's information and maps on the preserve: https://www.openspaceauthority.org/preserves/rancho.html. These are my pictures of Calero County Park: http://www.rhorii.com/#Calero-RanchoSanVicente.
