Wildflower Walk, Little Uvas Open Space Preserve, 4/29/23 by Ronald Horii
On 4/29/23, there was a wildflower walk at Little Uvas Open Space Preserve. It started after the BioBlitz that began in the morning: https://tinyurl.com/ycx3epp9. This was the description of it: "Springtime Exploration of Little Uvas Open Space Preserve! Spring is here and the flowers are blooming! Join us for a Springtime exploration at Little Uvas Open Space Preserve. This preserve offers about 2-miles of trail which go through gentle hills of serpentine soil, mixed oaks, grey pines, spring-fed pounds, and open meadows which offer a variety of unique native wildflowers. These hikes will be a great opportunity to explore a new place and learn a little more about native plants and ecosystems!" There was supposed to be two hikes at separate times, but one got delayed, so the two overlapped. One group was led by OSA Educational Program Coordinator, Michelle Garcia, with help from docents Nicole and Eric. The other group was led by docent Kirsty McKay. I helped with Kirsty's group. From the BioBlitz earlier, I knew where to look for the wildflowers. There was a wildflower hike in Little Uvas earlier this month on 4/8/23: https://tinyurl.com/2pj45ytd. Compare the wildflowers seen then with what was seen today. There were more flowers blooming of some species, less of others. Little Uvas Creek Preserve is owned by the Santa Clara Valley Open Space Authority, but is not open to the public yet. It was purchased in 2014 and was originally called the Melchor Ranch, after its last owners. It covers almost 300 acres and has 5 spring-fed ponds. It has a variety of environments, from forests to open grasslands and a hill with serpentine soil. Here are more of my pictures of Little Uvas Creek Preserve: https://www.rhorii.com/#Melchor
