South Bay Fishing in the City, Los Gatos Creek Park, 4/16/23 by Ronald Horii
Since 1995, South Bay Bay Fishing in the City events have been held in parks in Santa Clara County, teaching kids how to fish. Either trout or catfish were planted at local lakes for kids to catch at no cost. Fishing tackle and bait were provided, along with lessons on rigging and casting. Local events were held at Hellyer, Vasona, Los Gatos Creek, Lake Cunningham, and Ed Levin. Since 2008, trout planting was halted in all lakes in Santa Clara County except for Sandy Wool Lake in Ed Levin County Park. That's still the case, but special permission was obtained to plant rainbow trout in Pond 2 in Los Gatos Creek County Park for the weekend of 4/15-16/23 only. 1600 lbs. of trout, averaging 2 lbs. each were planted. On 4/15, only kids from 5-15 were allowed to fish. On 4/16, anyone 16 and over could fish too, if they had a fishing license. There was a limit of 2 fish per rod. I went on 4/16 and took these pictures. (I did not go fishing.) Here's more information about South Bay Fishing in the City:

The program is part of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife's Fishing in the City Program, founded in 1993: https://wildlife.ca.gov/Fishing-in-the-City. Here are more of my Los Gatos Creek Park and Trail pictures: http://www.rhorii.com/#LosGatosCreekPark-Trail. I used to go fishing at Los Gatos Creek Park, when it was planted with trout. This was best day I ever had fishing there, on 12/20/06: https://tinyurl.com/ymz5vw6d. The next South Bay Fishing in the City event will be held at Ed Levin County Park on May 20, 2023, starting at 8:00 am.
